33.

Whereas, then, all Christians have to guard humility, forasmuch as it is from Christ that they are called Christians, Whose Gospel no one considers with care, but that he discovers Him to be a Teacher of humility; specially is it becoming that they be followers and keepers of this virtue, who excel the rest of men in any great good, in order that they may have a great care of that, which I set down in the beginning, "By how much thou art great, by so much humble thyself in all things, and thou shall find grace before God." ¹ Wherefore, because perpetual Continence and specially virginity, is a great good in the Saints of God, they must with all watchfulness beware, that it be not corrupted with pride.

CHAPITRE XXXIII. L’HUMILITÉ NÉCESSAIRE AUX CHRÉTIENS, MAIS SURTOUT AUX VIERGES.

33. Le chrétien porte le nom même de Jésus-Christ. C'est assez dire qu'il doit pratiquer l'humilité, car ce serait ne pas connaîtra; l'Evangile que de ne pas y voir les plus hautes leçons d'humilité que nous y donne le Sauveur. Mais la pratique de cette vertu est spécialement nécessaire à ceux qui brillent au-dessus des autres par quelque privilège spécial. Ceux-là surtout ne doivent pas oublier cette parole déjà citée : « Plus tu es grand, plus tu dois t'humilier et tu. trouveras grâce devant Dieu». Comme une grande vertu, dans l'Eglise de Dieu. c'est la continence perpétuelle et surtout la sainte virginité, aucun soin n'est à négliger pour soustraire cette vertu à l'injustice de l'orgueil.
