Chapter 16.--What is Meant by the Conforming of the Saints to the Image of The Son of God.

Then, again, these words, "Predestinate to be conformed to the image of the Son of God," ¹ may be understood of the inner man. So in another place He says to us, "Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed in the renewing of your mind." ² In so far, then, as we are transformed so as not to be conformed to the world, we are conformed to the Son of God. It may also be understood thus, that as He was conformed to us by assuming mortality, we shall be conformed to Him by immortality; and this indeed is connected with the resurrection of the body. But if we are also taught in these words what form our bodies shall rise in, as the measure we spoke of before, so also this conformity is to be understood not of size, but of age. Accordingly all shall rise in the stature they either had attained or would have attained had they lived to their prime, although it will be no great disadvantage even if the form of the body be infantine or aged, while no infirmity shall remain in the mind nor in the body itself. So that even if any one contends that every person will rise again in the same bodily form in which he died, we need not spend much labor in disputing with him.

COMMENT IL FAUT ENTENDRE QUE LES SAINTS SERONT RENDUS CONFORMES A L’IMAGE DU FILS DE DIEU.

Et quand l’Apôtre parle de ces « prédestinés qui seront rendus conformes à l’image du Fils de Dieu¹ », on peut fort bien entendre qu’il s’agit de l’homme intérieur. C’est ainsi qu’il est dit dans un autre endroit: « Ne vous conformez point au siècle, mais réformez-vous par un renouvellement de votre esprit² ». C’est par la même partie de notre être que nous devons réformer pour n’être pas conformes au siècle, que nous deviendrons conformes au Fils de Dieu. On peut encore entendre cette parole dans ce sens que, Dieu-lui-même s’étant rendu conforme à nous, quand il a pris la condition mortelle, de même nous lui serons conformes par l’immortalité, ce qui a rapport aussi à la résurrection des corps. Si l’on veut expliquer ces paroles par la forme sous laquelle les corps ressusciteront, cette conformité, aussi bien que la mesure dont parle l’Apôtre, ne regardera que l’âge, et non pas la taille. Chacun donc ressuscitera aussi grand qu’il était ou qu’il aurait été dans sa jeunesse, et quant à la forme, il importera peu que ce soit celle d’un vieillard ou d’un enfant, puisque ni l’esprit ni le corps ne seront plus sujets à aucune faiblesse. Si donc on s’avisait de soutenir que chacun ressuscitera dans la même conformation des membres qu’il avait à sa mort, il n’y aurait pas lieu à s’engager contre lui dans une laborieuse discussion.
