CHAPITRE XXV. MOÏSE A EU EN VUE LE VRAI CHRIST ET CONDAMNÉ D'AVANCE L'ERREUR DE MANÈS.

Nous croyons donc que tout ce que Moïse a écrit, il l'a écrit en vue du Christ. Nous ne pouvons en donner la démonstration dans cet ouvrage. Mais comme nous nous sommes engagé à traiter les points que Fauste lui-même a choisis dans ses écrits pour les réfuter ou les blâmer, on est en droit d'exiger que nous nous expliquions sur la sentence de mort prononcée par Moïse contre tout prophète ou chef qui tenterait de détourner le peuple de son Dieu ou de violer quelque commandement, et que nous démontrions que son but est de maintenir la foi enseignée dans l'Eglise du Christ. En effet, éclairé par l'Esprit prophétique et par Dieu même qui lui parlait, Moïse prévoyait qu'un jour de nombreux hérétiques se lèveraient pour enseigner diverses erreurs opposées à la doctrine du Christ, et prêcher un Christ quine serait point le vrai Christ Car celui-là est le véritable, qui a été annoncé d'avance par les prophéties de ce même Moïse et des autres saints personnages de cette nation. Or, Moïse condamnait à mort quiconque en prêcherait un autre. Et que fait maintenant la langue de l'Eglise catholique? Ne frappe-t-elle pas du glaive spirituel, de l'épée à deux tranchants des deux Testaments, tous ceux qui veulent nous détourner de notre Dieu ou violer quelqu'un des commandements ? Et parmi eux se trouve au premier rang Manès lui-même, puisque la loi et les Prophètes accablent de leur incontestable vérité l'erreur par laquelle il voudrait nous détourner de notre Dieu, du Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, que le Christ présente à nos hommages, et violer les préceptes de la loi où nous reconnaissons que le Christ est prophétisé sous le voile des figures.

In fulfillment of our promise that we would prove the reference to Christ in those passages selected by Faustus from the writings of Moses for adverse criticism, since we cannot here point out the reference to Christ which we believe to exist in all the writings of Moses, it becomes our duty to show that this commandment of Moses, that every prophet or prince should be killed who tried to turn away the people from their God, or to break any commandment, refers to the preservation of the faith which is taught in the Church of Christ. Moses no doubt knew in the spirit of prophecy, and from what he himself heard from God, that many heretics would arise to teach errors of all kinds against the doctrine of Christ, and to preach another Christ than the true Christ. For the true Christ is He that was foretold in the prophecies uttered by Moses himself, and by the other holy men of that nation. Moses accordingly commanded that whoever tried to teach another Christ should be put to death. In obedience to this command, the voice of the Catholic Church, as with the spiritual two-edged sword of both Testaments, puts to death all who try to turn us away from our God, or to break any of the commandments. And chief among these is Manichaeus himself; for the truth of the law and the prophets convinces him of error as trying to turn us away from our God, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, whom Christ acknowledges, and as trying to break the commandments of the law, which, even when they are only figurative, we regard as prophetic of Christ.
