CHAPITRE XLI. CE QUE FIGURAIENT LOTH ET SA FEMME.

Loth, son frère, homme juste et hospitalier au milieu de Sodome, chaste et pur de toutes les souillures des habitants de cette ville, mérita d'être sauvé de l'incendie qui était la figure du jugement à venir. En cela, il était le type du corps du Christ, qui, dans la personne de tous les saints, gémit maintenant parmi les méchants et les impies, dont il réprouve les actions, et du mélange desquels il sera délivré à la fin des siècles, quand ceux-là seront condamnés au supplice du feu éternel. La femme de Loth représente une autre espèce d'hommes, ceux qui étant appelés par la grâce de Dieu, regardent en arrière, à la différence de Paul qui oubliant ce qui est en arrière, s'avance vers ce qui est en avant[^1]. Aussi le Seigneur dit-il lui-même : « Quiconque ayant mis la main à la charrue, regarde en arrière, n'est pas propre au royaume de Dieu[^2] ». Et il rappelle l'exemple de cette femme, pour nous assaisonner, en quelque sorte, afin que nous ne tombions point dans la fadeur par notre négligence, mais que nous nous tenions prudemment en garde contre ce mal. Car c'est pour notre instruction qu'elle a été changée en statue de sel. En effet, le Seigneur, insistant vivement sur la nécessité de tendre constamment en avant en s'arrachant au passé, dit : « Souvenez-vous de la femme de Loth[^3] ». Et quand Loth lui-même eut un commerce charnel avec ses filles, ce n'était pas seulement un signe qu'il était délivré de Sodome, mais la figure de quelque autre chose. En effet, il semble représenter alors la loi future que certains de ses enfants, établis sous son empire, comprennent mal, l'enivrent en quelque sorte; et en usant d'elle d'une manière illégitime, ils enfantent des oeuvres d'infidélité. « La loi est bonne », dit l'Apôtre, « si on en use légitimement[^4]. »

Lot also, the brother of Abraham, was just and hospitable in Sodom, and was found worthy to escape the conflagration which prefigured the future judgment; for he was free from all participation in the corruption of the people of Sodom. He was a type of the body of Christ, which in the person of all the saints both groans now among the ungodly and wicked, to whose evil deeds it does not consent, and will at the end of the world be rescued from their society, when they are doomed to the punishment of eternal fire. Lot's wife was the type of a different class of men,--of those, namely, who, when called by the grace of God, look back, instead of, like Paul, forgetting the things that are behind, and looking forward to the things that are before. ¹ The Lord Himself says: "No man that putteth his hand to the plough, and looketh back, is fit for the kingdom of Heaven." ² Nor did He omit to mention the case of Lot's wife; for she, for our warning, was turned into a pillar of salt, that being thus seasoned we might not trifle thoughtlessly with this danger, but be on our guard against it. So, when the Lord was admonishing every one to get rid of the things that are behind by the most strenuous endeavor to reach the things that are before, He said, "Remember Lot's wife." ³ And, in addition to these, there is still a third type in Lot, when his daughters lay with him. For here Lot seems to prefigure the future law; for those who spring from the law, and are placed under the law, by misunderstanding it, stupefy it, as it were, and bring forth the works of unbelief by an unlawful use of the law. "The law is good" says the apostle, "if a man use it lawfully." ⁴
