CHAPITRE LXIII. LA BÉNÉDICTION DE JUDA.

Mais, disent-ils, ce Juda qui a commis un inceste avec sa belle-fille, est compté parmi les douze patriarches[^1]. Eh ! Juda, qui a trahi le Seigneur, n'a-t-il pas été compté parmi les douze Apôtres, et, quoique démon, envoyé avec eux et comme l'un d'eux, pour prêcher l'Evangile[^2] ? A cela les Manichéens répondent : Après un si grand crime, celui-ci s'est pendu et s'est retranché par là même du nombre des Apôtres[^3]; tandis que l'autre, malgré son acte honteux, a été béni et loué parmi ses frères et plus que tous ses frères, par ce même père à qui Dieu rend un si glorieux témoignage[^4]. Oui, et c'est ce qui fait voir plus clairement que ce n'est point à lui que se rapporte la prophétie, mais au Christ qui était annoncé comme devant naître de sa tribu selon la chair; et c'est pour cela encore que la divine Ecriture n'a point dû taire et n'a point tu son crime, afin qu'on cherchât quelque autre à qui appliquer ces éloges du père, qui évidemment ne lui convenaient plus après son action déshonorante.

But, it is said, Judah, who lay with his daughter-in-law, is reckoned as one of the twelve patriarchs. And was not Judas, who betrayed the Lord, reckoned among the twelve apostles? And was not this one of them, who was a devil, sent along with them to preach the gospel? ¹ In reply to this, it will be said that after his crime Judas hanged himself, and was removed from the number of the apostles; while Judah, after his evil conduct, was not only blessed along with his brethren, but got special honor and approval from his father, who is so highly spoken of in Scripture. But the main lesson to be learned from this is, that this prophecy refers not to Judah, but to Christ, who was foretold as to come in the flesh from his tribe; and the very reason for the mention of this crime of Judah is to be found in the desirableness of teaching us to look for another meaning in the words of his father, which are seen not to be applicable to him in his misconduct, from the praise which they express.
