CHAPITRE II. LES ÉVANGILES SONT SUPPOSÉS; ILS NE S'ACCORDENT SUR RIEN.

Quoi! si le Testament du Père renferme des parties où il est difficile de reconnaître sa voix (car vous prétendez que la loi judaïque a été donnée par le Père, et nous savons combien elle renferme de choses qui vous font horreur, des choses dont vous rougissez, au point que, depuis longtemps, vous la croyez altérée quant à l'esprit, bien qu'une partie ait été écrite pour vous de la main même du Père, et une autre de la main de Moïse), quoi! vous imaginerez-vous que le Testament du Fils seul n'a pu être gâté, seul ne renferme rien qui doive être désapprouvé, surtout quand il est certain que ce n'est point lui qui l'a écrit, ni ses Apôtres, mais je ne sais quels personnages douteux qui, pour rendre croyable ce qu'ils écrivaient sans savoir et longtemps après coup, ont mis en tête de leurs livres soit les noms des Apôtres, soit les noms de ceux qui avaient suivi les Apôtres, en affirmant qu'ils écrivaient d'après eux? En quoi, ce me semble, ils ont fait grande injure aux disciples du Christ; puisqu'ils mettaient sur leur compte leurs propres divergences et leurs contradictions, et affirmaient écrire d'après eux des Evangiles remplis de tant d'erreurs, de tant de récits et de sentences contradictoires, au point de ne s'accorder en aucune façon ni entre eux ni avec eux-mêmes. N'est ce pas là simplement calomnier les gens de bien, et jeter un brandon de discorde dans l'assemblée fraternelle des disciples du Christ? Or, en les lisant, en les étudiant avec 1'œil parfaitement pur de notre coeur, nous avons jugé qu'il était de toute justice d'en prendre ce qu'il y a d'utile, c'est-à-dire ce qui est propre à édifier notre foi et à procurer la gloire du Christ Notre-Seigneur, et de son Père le Dieu tout-puissant; puis de rejeter le reste qui ne s'accorde ni avec la Majesté divine ni avec notre foi.

If there are parts of the Testament of the Father which we are not bound to observe (for you attribute the Jewish law to the Father, and it is well known that many things in it shock you, and make you ashamed, so that in heart you no longer regard it as free from corruption, though, as you believe, the Father Himself partly wrote it for you with His own finger while part was written by Moses, who was faithful and trustworthy), the Testament of the Son must be equally liable to corruption, and may equally well contain objectionable things; especially as it is allowed not to have been written by the Son Himself, nor by His apostles, but long after, by some unknown men, who, lest they should be suspected of writing of things they knew nothing of, gave to their books the names of the apostles, or of those who were thought to have followed the apostles, declaring the contents to be according to these originals. In this, I think, they do grievous wrong to the disciples of Christ, by quoting their authority for the discordant and contradictory statements in these writings, saying that it was according to them that they wrote the Gospels, which are so full of errors and discrepancies, both in facts and in opinions, that they can be harmonized neither with themselves nor with one another. This is nothing else than to slander good men, and to bring the charge of dissension on the brotherhood of the disciples. In reading the Gospels, the clear intention of our heart perceives the errors, and, to avoid all injustice, we accept whatever is useful, in the way of building up our faith, and promoting the glory of the Lord Christ, and of the Almighty God, His Father, while we reject the rest as unbecoming the majesty of God and Christ, and inconsistent with our belief.
