CHAPITRE VI. TOUTES LES NATIONS ÉTANT BÉNIES DANS LE CHRIST, FILS D'ABRAHAM, IL EST DONC LE VRAI CHRIST.

On nous dira peut-être : Montrez-nous où le Christ a été prédit par les Prophètes israélites? comme si c'était une mince autorité que celle des Apôtres, quand ils nous disent que ce que nous avons lu dans les livres des Prophètes israélites s'est accompli dans le Christ; ou celle du Christ lui-même qui atteste que c'est de lui que cela a été écrit. Par conséquent, si quelqu'un ne peut donner cette démonstration, c'est une preuve que son intelligence est en défaut : car ni les Apôtres, ni le Christ, ni les saints livres ne mentent. Cependant, pour ne pas trop m'étendre et pour me borner à un seul point, je citerai ce que l'Apôtre a dit à la suite, dans le même passage : « La parole de Dieu ne peut rester sans effet; car tous ceux qui descendent d'Israël a ne sont pas Israélites; ni ceux qui appartiennent à la race d'Abraham ne sont pas a tous ses enfants ; mais c'est en Isaac que sera ta postérité ; c'est-à-dire, ce ne sont pas les enfants selon la chair qui sont enfants de Dieu, mais ce sont les enfants de la promesse qui sont comptés dans la postérité[^1] ». Que répondront-ils à cela, quand il est dit clairement ailleurs, à Abraham, à propos de cette postérité : « Toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies dans ta postérité[^2]? » En effet, s'il s'agissait, dans notre discussion, du temps où l'Apôtre écrivait : « Les promesses ont été faites à Abraham et à celui qui naîtrait de lui; il ne dit pas : A ceux qui naîtront, comme parlant de plusieurs, mais comme d'un seul : Et à celui qui, naîtra de toi, c'est-à-dire au Christ[^3] » : peut-être aurait-on quelque raison de ne pas croire avant de voir toutes les nations avoir foi au Christ que l'on annonce comme étant de la race d'Abraham. Mais maintenant que nous voyons l'accomplissement de ce qui a été prédit si longtemps d'avance, maintenant que toutes les nations sont déjà bénies dans la postérité d'Abraham, à qui on avait dit, deux mille ans auparavant : « Toutes les nations seront bénies dans ta postérité » ; qui sera assez opiniâtre dans sa folie pour tenter d'introduire un autre Christ qui ne soit pas de la race d'Abraham, ou pour prétendre que les prophéties des Hébreux, de ce peuple, dont Abraham est le père, n'ont rien prédit sur le véritable Christ?

Our opponents may perhaps ask us to point out passages where Christ is predicted by the prophets of Israel. One would think they might be satisfied with the authority of the apostles, who declare that what we read in the writings of the Hebrew prophets was fulfilled in Christ, or with that of Christ Himself, who says that these things were written of Him. Whoever is unable to point out the passages should lay the blame on his own ignorance; for the apostles and Christ and the sacred Scriptures are not chargeable with falsehood. However, one instance out of many may be adduced. The apostle, in the verses following the passage quoted above, says: "The word of God cannot fail. For they are not all Israel which are of Israel; neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called: that is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of promise are counted for the seed." ¹ What can our opponent say against this, in view of the declaration made to Abraham: "In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed?" At the time when the apostle gave the following exposition of this promise, "To Abraham and to his seed were the promises made. He saith not, To seed, as of many, but as of one, To thy seed, which is Christ," ² a doubt on this point might then have been less inexcusable, for at that time all nations had not yet believed on Christ, who is preached as of the seed of Abraham. But now that we see the fulfillment of what we read in the ancient prophecy,--now that all nations are actually blessed in the seed of Abraham, to whom it was said thousands of years ago, "In thy seed shall all nations be blessed,"--it is mere obstinate folly to try to bring in another Christ, not of the seed of Abraham, or to hold that there are no predictions of Christ in the prophetical books of the children of Abraham.
