Im weiteren lässt sich zeigen, dass auch der Ursprung der Jungfrau selber nicht in jenem Stamm lag, dem David zweifellos angehörte – ich meine den Stamm Juda, aus dem die jüdischen Könige kommen -, sondern im Stamm Levi, aus dem die Priester kommen; das zeigt sich ganz deutlich, weil sie als Vater einen Priester namens Joachim hatte, der aber in der betreffenden Genealogie nirgends Erwähnung findet. Wie kann man also behaupten, Maria gehöre zu dieser Wurzel des Davidischen Geschlechts, aus dem sie, wie man sieht, weder Vater noch Ehemann hat? Und deshalb kann auch der Sohn, der aus ihr geboren wird, wer immer es ist, niemals Sohn Davids sein, ausser du rückst seine Mutter so nahe an Joseph heran, dass sie als seine Tochter oder Ehefrau gelten kann.

Moreover, the Virgin herself appears to have belonged not to the tribe of Judah, to which the Jewish kings belonged, and which all agree was David's tribe, but to the priestly tribe of Levi. This appears from the fact that the Virgin's father Joachim was a priest; and his name does not occur in the genealogy. How, then, can Mary be brought within the pale of relationship to David, when she has neither father nor husband belonging to it? Consequently, Mary's son cannot possibly be the son of David, unless you can bring the mother into some connection with Joseph, so as to be either his wife or his daughter.
