Dès lors, puisqu'il refusait, avant qu'il eût atteint le plus haut degré de perfection . dans la charité, de soutenir la lutte qui réprimait son orgueil, il a mérité de s'entendre dire :« Ma grâce te suffit, car la vertu se perfectionne dans la faiblesse ». « Dans la faiblesse», non pas seulement, comme le croit Pélage, dans la faiblesse de la chair, mais tout à la fois dans la faiblesse de la chair et de l'esprit. En effet, eu égard à cette souveraine perfection, son esprit était d'une grande faiblesse, et pour empêcher qu'il s'enorgueillit, il dut ressentir l'aiguillon de la chair ou l'ange de Satan. D'un autre côté, si nous comparons cet apôtre à tant d'hommes charnels qui ne perçoivent pas les choses qui sont de l'esprit de Dieu¹, il nous paraîtra doué d'une force prodigieuse. Si donc la force se perfectionne dans la faiblesse, celui qui n'avoue pas sa faiblesse ne saurait se perfectionner, Or, la grâce par laquelle la force se perfectionne dans la faiblesse, conduit à la perfection souveraine et à la glorification éternelle ceux qui sont prédestinés et appelés selon les décrets de Dieu². Avec cette grâce, non-seulement nous savons ce que nous avons à faire, mais nous réglons nos couvres sur notre connaissance ; non-seulement nous croyons ce que nous devons aimer, mais nous aimons ce que nous croyons.

Chapter 13 [XII.]--Grace Causes Us to Do.

To him, therefore, who is reluctant to endure the troublesome process, whereby this vaunting disposition is restrained, before he attains to the ultimate and highest perfection of charity, it is most properly said, "My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness," ¹ --in weakness, that is, not of the flesh only, as this man supposes, but both of the flesh and of the mind; because the mind, too, was, in comparison of that last stage of complete perfection, weak, and to it also was assigned, in order to check its elation, that messenger of Satan, the thorn in the flesh; although it was very strong, in contrast with the carnal or animal faculties, which as yet understand not the things of the Spirit of God. ² Inasmuch, then, as strength is made perfect in weakness, whoever does not own himself to be weak, is not in the way to be perfected. This grace, however, by which strength is perfected in weakness, conducts all who are predestinated and called according to the divine purpose ³ to the state of the highest perfection and glory. By such grace it is effected, not only that we discover what ought to be done, but also that we do what we have discovered,--not only that we believe what ought to be loved, but also that we love what we have believed.
