Les chrétiens trouvent également un solennel témoignage rendu à cette chair et à ce sang par le grand-prêtre Melchisédech, au moment où il bénissait Abraham; et le psalmiste, longtemps après Melchisédech, et longtemps avant l'événement, résumait la foi des patriarches et la nôtre quand il s'écriait : « Vous êtes prêtrepour l'éternité , selon l'ordre de Melchisédech¹ ». En effet, à tous ceux qui trouvent la mort dans Adam, Jésus-Christ vient en aide, par cela même qu'il a été établi médiateur pour la vie. Or, s'il est médiateur, ce n'est pas en tant qu'il est égal à son Père, car à ce titre il est comme son Père, infiniment au-dessus de nous; là donc où il y a égalité de distance peut-il y avoir médiation? Aussi l'Apôtre ne se contente pas de dire : « Il n'y a qu'un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes, Jésus-Christ » ; mais il insiste à dessein sur ce mot: « Jésus-Christ homme²». C'est donc comme homme, qu'il est médiateur; ce qui le rend inférieur à son Père, c'est ce qui le rapproche de nous; ce qui l'élève au-dessus de nous, c'est ce qui le rapproche de son Père. Exprimons cette pensée plus clairement encore : il est inférieur à son Père, parce qu'il a revêtu la forme d'esclave³; il nous est supérieur, même comme homme, parce qu'il est exempt de tout péché.

Chapter 33 [XVIII.]--How Christ is Our Mediator.

Of this flesh and blood Melchizedek also, when he blessed Abram himself, ¹ gave the testimony which is very well known to Christian believers, so that long afterwards it was said to Christ in the Psalms: "Thou art a Priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." ² This was not then an accomplished fact, but was still future; yet that faith of the fathers, which is the self-same faith as our own, used to chant it. Now, to all who find death in Adam, Christ is of this avail, that He is the Mediator for life. He is, however, not a Mediator, because He is equal with the Father; for in this respect He is Himself as far distant from us as the Father; and how can there be any medium where the distance is the very same? Therefore the apostle does not say, "There is one Mediator between God and men, even Jesus Christ;" but his words are, "The Man Christ Jesus." ³ He is the Mediator, then, in that He is man,--inferior to the Father, by so much as He is nearer to ourselves, and superior to us, by so much as He is nearer to the Father. This is more openly expressed thus: "He is inferior to the Father, because in the form of a servant;" ⁴ superior to us, because without spot of sin.
