11.

Are you afraid that your patrimony perchance may fall short, if you should begin to do liberally from it? Yet when has it ever happened that resources ¹ could fail the righteous man, since it is written, "The Lord will not slay with famine the righteous soul?" ² Elias in the desert is fed by the ministry of ravens; and a meal from heaven is made ready for Daniel in the den, when shut up by the king's command for a prey to the lions; and you are afraid that food should be wanting to you, labouring and deserving well of the Lord, although He Himself in the Gospel bears witness, for the rebuke of those whose mind is doubtful and faith small, and says: "Behold the fowls of heaven, that they sow not, nor reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them: are you not of more value than they?" ³ God feeds the fowls, and daily food is afforded to the sparrows; and to creatures which have no sense of things divine there is no want of drink or food. Thinkest thou that to a Christian--thinkest thou that to a servant of the Lord--thinkest thou that to one given up to good works--thinkest thou that to one that is dear to his Lord, anything will be wanting?

11. Wahre Diener Gottes können sowenig wie Elias jemals in Not geraten.

Du fürchtest, es könnte vielleicht dein Erbgut dahinschwinden, wenn du anfängst, davon reichlich Wohltätigkeit zu üben. Wann ist es denn schon vorgekommen, dass es dem Gerechten an den Mitteln zum Leben hätte gebrechen können? Steht doch geschrieben: „Der Herr wird die gerechte Seele nicht durch Hunger töten!“¹ Elias wird in der Wüste durch Raben gespeist, die ihm dienen² , und als Daniel auf Befehl des Königs in die Löwengrube eingeschlossen ist, da wird ihm durch göttliche Fürsorge ein Mahl bereitet³ ; und S. 270 du fürchtest, es möchte dir, wenn du Gutes tust und dir bei dem Herrn Verdienste erwirbst, an Nahrung mangeln? Bezeugt und sagt er doch selbst zur Zurechtweisung der Zweifler und Kleingläubigen im Evangelium: „Seht die Vögel des Himmels an: sie säen nicht, sie ernten nicht, sie sammeln nicht in Scheunen, und euer himmlischer Vater nähret sie doch! Seid ihr denn nicht mehr als sie?“⁴ Die Vögel speist Gott, und den Sperlingen wird ihre tägliche Nahrung zuteil, und auch denen, die keinen Sinn haben für etwas Göttliches, gebricht es weder an Trank noch an Speise: und du glaubst, es könne einem Christen, es könne einem Diener Gottes, du meinst, es werde einem, der sich in guten Werken eifrig zeigt, einem, der seinem Herrn teuer ist, an irgendetwas mangeln?
