30.
Da somit all jene vortrefflichen Gebote des Herrn, in denen Faustus Widersprüche zu den alten Büchern der Hebräer nachweisen wollte, gerade auch in jenen Büchern zu finden sind, bedeutet dieser Satz, dass der Herr nicht gekommen ist, das Gesetz aufzulösen, sondern es zu vollenden (Mt. 5,17), nichts anderes als dass auch diese Gebote, durch die jenes Gesetz heilig, gerecht und gut ist (Rm. 7,12) – abgesehen von jenen als Modellbilder dienenden Verheissungen, die ja nach dem Eintreten der Wirklichkeit erfüllt waren und beiseite gelegt wurden – in uns zur Vollendung kamen, und zwar nicht im Sinn des alten Buchstabens, der befiehlt und die Sünden der Stolzen durch die Schuld der Gesetzesübertretung noch grösser macht, sondern im Sinn des neuen Geistes, der Hilfe bringt und den Demütigen, die ihre Sünden bekennen, durch die heilbringende Gnade die Freiheit schenkt. Denn in Tat und Wahrheit ist es so, dass zwar all diese erhabenen Gebote auch in jenen alten Büchern vorhanden sind, doch das Ziel, worauf sie gerichtet sind, ist dort verborgen, obschon die Heiligen jener Zeit bereits danach lebten, indem sie dessen zukünftige Enthüllung voraussahen und es teils als Propheten prophetisch verhüllten, teils als Weise das prophetisch Verhüllte zu deuten wussten.

Since, then, all these excellent precepts of the Lord, which Faustus tries to prove to be contrary to the old books of the Hebrews, are found in these very books, the only sense in which the Lord came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it, is this, that besides the fulfillment of the prophetic types, which are set aside by their actual accomplishment, the precepts also, in which the law is holy, and just, and good, are fulfilled in us, not by the oldness of the letter which commands, and increases the offence of the proud by the additional guilt of transgression, but by the newness of the Spirit, who aids us, and by the obedience of the humble, through the saving grace which sets us free. For, while all these sublime precepts are found in the ancient books, still the end to which they point is not there revealed; although the holy men who foresaw the revelation lived in accordance with it, either veiling it in prophecy as suited the time, or themselves discovering the truth thus veiled.
