Therefore in the Gospel, the Lord, the Teacher of our life and Master of eternal salvation, quickening the assembly of believers, and providing for them for ever when quickened, among His divine commands and precepts of heaven, commands and prescribes nothing more frequently than that we should devote ourselves to almsgiving, and not depend on earthly possessions, but rather lay up heavenly treasures. "Sell," says He, "your goods, and give alms." ¹ And again: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust do corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also." ² And when He wished to set forth a man perfect and complete by the observation of the law, ³ He said, "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me." ⁴ Moreover, in another place He says that a merchant of the heavenly grace, and a gainer of eternal salvation, ought to purchase the precious pearl--that is, eternal life--at the price of the blood of Christ, from the amount of his patrimony, parting with all his wealth for it. He says: "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchantman seeking goodly pearls. And when he found a precious pearl, he went away and sold all that he had, and bought it." ⁵

7. Am nachdrücklichsten hat uns Christus selbst bei zahlreichen Gelegenheiten zur Barmherzigkeit gemahnt.

Daher wird uns im Evangelium von dem Herrn, dem Lehrer unseres Lebens und dem Führer zum ewigen Heile, der das Volk der Gläubigen zu neuem Leben S. 266 erweckt und für die Neubelebten auf die Ewigkeit bedacht ist, unter seinen göttlichen Geboten und himmlischen Lehren nichts häufiger eingeschärft und vorgeschrieben als das eine: wir sollten uns eifrig zeigen im Almosengeben und nicht an irdischem Besitz hängen, sondern vielmehr himmlische Schätze sammeln. "Verkaufet", sagt er, "Eure Habe und gebt Almosen!"¹ und wiederum: "Sammelt euch keine Schätze auf Erden, wo Motte und Rost sie verzehren und wo die Diebe nachgraben und stehlen! Sammelt euch aber Schätze im Himmel, wo weder Motte noch Rost sie verzehren und wo die Diebe nicht nachgraben [und stehlen]! Denn wo dein Schatz ist, dort wird auch dein Herz sein"² . Und als er uns einen durch die Beobachtungen das Gesetzes Vollkommenen und Vollendeten vor Augen stellen wollte, sagte er: "Willst du vollkommen sein, so gehe hin und verkaufe all das Deinige und gib es den Armen, und du wirst einen Schatz im Himmel haben; und komm, folge mir nach!³ Ebenso sagt er an einer anderen Stelle, wer sich die himmlische Gnade erkaufen und das ewige Heil erwerben wolle, der müsse seine ganze Habe veräußern und die kostbare Perle, das heißt das durch Christi Blut so kostbare ewige Leben, von dem Betrage seinen Vermögens erstehen. "Das Himmelreich", sagt er, "ist ähnlich einem Kaufmann, der gute Perlen suchte. Sobald er aber eine kostbare Perle gefunden hatte, ging der hin und verkaufte alles, was er hatte, und kaufte sie"⁴ .
