Kapitel XVIII. Der Kaiser befragt ein Orakel, der Dämon antwortet nicht, da er von der Nähe des Märtyrers Babylas erschreckt wird.

Nachdem er angeordnet hatte, dass die heidnischen Tempel in Antiochia geöffnet werden sollten, wollte er unbedingt ein Orakel von *Apollo von Daphne erhalten. Aber der Dämon, der den Tempel bewohnte, schwieg aus Furcht vor seinem Nachbarn, dem Märtyrer Babylas, denn der Sarg, der den Leichnam dieses Heiligen enthielt, stand ganz in der Nähe. Als der Kaiser von diesem Umstand erfuhr, befahl er, den Sarg sofort zu entfernen. Daraufhin brachten die Christen von Antiochia, darunter auch Frauen und Kinder, den Sarg unter feierlichem Jubel und Psalmengesang von Daphne in die Stadt. Die Psalmen waren solche, die die Götter der Heiden und diejenigen, die auf sie und ihre Bilder vertrauten, tadelten.

Chapter XVIII. The Emperor consulting an Oracle, the Demon gives no Response, being awed by the Nearness of Babylas the Martyr.

Having ordered that the pagan temples at Antioch should be opened, he was very eager to obtain an oracle from *Apollo of Daphne. But the demon that inhabited the temple remained silent through fear of his neighbor, Babylas ¹ the martyr; for the coffin which contained the body of that saint was close by. When the emperor was informed of this circumstance, he commanded that the coffin should be immediately P. 89 removed: upon which the Christians of Antioch, including women and children, transported the coffin from Daphne to the city, with solemn rejoicings and chanting of psalms. The psalms ² were such as cast reproach on the gods of the heathen, and those who put confidence in them and their images.
