37.

Derselbe Jesus Christus, Gottes eingeborener, d. h. einziger Sohn, unser Herr, ist nämlich aus dem Heiligen Geist und der Jungfrau Maria geboren. Der Heilige Geist ist aber eine Gabe Gottes, eine Gabe freilich, die dem Geber selber gleich ist; demgemäß ist auch der Heilige Geist Gott, und zwar nicht weniger als wie der Vater und der Sohn. Wenn nun die Geburt Christi seiner Menschheit nach das Werk des Heiligen Geistes ist, was offenbart sich dann darin anders als gerade die Gnade? Denn damals, als die Jungfrau (Maria) den Engel fragte, wie denn die Erfüllung seiner Botschaft möglich sein solle, da sie ja keinen Mann erkenne, da antwortete ihr dieser: „Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen und die Kraft des Allerhöchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das aus dir geboren werden wird, Sohn Gottes genannt werden¹.“ Und als Joseph sie entlassen wollte, weil er eine Ehebrecherin in ihr vermutete, da er ja wußte, daß sie nicht von ihm empfangen habe, erhielt er vom Engel die Antwort: „Fürchte dich nicht, Maria als dein Weib zu dir zu nehmen; denn was in ihr gezeugt worden ist, das ist vom Heiligen Geiste²“, d. h. was, wie du argwöhnst, von einem anderen Manne stammen soll, das ist vom Heiligen Geiste.

Chapter 37.--The Same Grace is Further Clearly Manifested in This, that the Birth of Christ According to the Flesh is of the Holy Ghost.

For the same Jesus Christ who is the only-begotten, that is, the only Son of God, our Lord, was born of the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary. And we know that the Holy Spirit is the gift of God, the gift being Himself indeed equal to the Giver. And therefore the Holy Spirit also is God, not inferior to the Father and the Son. The fact, therefore, that the nativity of Christ in His human nature was by the Holy Spirit, is another clear manifestation of grace. For when the Virgin asked the angel how this which he had announced should be, seeing she knew not a man, the angel answered, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." ¹ And when Joseph was minded to put her away, suspecting her of adultery, as he knew she was not with child by himself, he was told by the angel, "Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost:" ² that is, what thou suspectest to be begotten of another man is of the Holy Ghost.
