Es gibt aber bei euch im Buch Daniel (cf. Dan. 1,12) noch die andere Geschichte von den drei jungen Männern, die euch in genau so grosse Verlegenheit stürzen wird, wenn sich erhärten sollte, dass es Dämonenreligion ist, sich gewisser Speisen zu enthalten. Es heisst da nämlich, dass sie sich nicht nur jener Speisen enthalten haben, die durch das Gesetz verboten sind, sondern sogar erlaubter Speisen. Diese jungen Männer pflegt ihr ja zu bewundern und unter die Märtyrer einzureihen, obwohl auch sie die Lehre der Dämonen befolgt haben, falls sich erhärtet, dass dieses Zeugnis (I Tim. 4,1 ff.) vom Apostel stammt.
Im weitern berichtet Daniel selber (cf. Dan. 10,2 ff.), dass er drei volle Wochen gefastet, und dabei kein Fleisch gegessen und keinen Wein getrunken habe, während er für sein Volk betete. Was heisst das nun? Verherrlicht auch er sich im Namen der Lehre der Dämonen, will er sich Ruhm holen aus dem falschen Rat des Geistes der Täuschung?

Besides, you have in your Book of Daniel the account of the three youths, which you will find it difficult to reconcile with the opinion that to abstain from meats is the doctrine of devils. For we are told that they abstained not only from what the law forbade, but even from what it allowed; 1 and you are wont to praise them, and count them as martyrs; though they too followed the doctrine of devils, if this is to be taken as the apostle's opinion. And Daniel himself declares that he fasted for three weeks, not eating flesh or drinking wine, while he prayed for his people. 2 How is it that he boasts of this doctrine of devils, and glories in the falsehood of a lying spirit?
