Da ihr nun aber zur Überzeugung gelangt seid, dass auch das Alte Testament von Gott stammt, wäre meiner Meinung nach eure Missachtung seiner Gebote viel leichter verständlich und entschuldbar, wenn ihr zugäbet, dass es durch unpassende Zufügungen verfälscht wurde, als wenn ihr es, ohne darin Fälschungen oder Textverderbnisse anzuerkennen, verächtlich behandelt. Wann immer die Frage gestellt wird, warum ihr die Gebote des Alten Testamentes übertretet, habe ich mich deshalb stets so geäussert, und tue es auch heute noch, dass es entweder kluge Einsicht von euch ist, über Unechtes hinwegzusehen oder aber Halsstarrigkeit und Hochmut, Echtes zu vernachlässigen. Da du nun aber von mir verlangst, jede Einzelheit zu glauben, die in die Bücher des Neuen Testaments eingeflossen ist, wenn ich dieses Testament als Ganzes anerkenne, dann lasse dir fürs erste gesagt sein, dass auch du an vieles, was sich im Alten Testament findet, – wenigstens in deinem Innersten – nicht glaubst, obwohl du ja bekennst, das Testament als Ganzes anzuerkennen. Zu jenem Satz etwa, dass ein jeder verflucht sei, der am Holz gehangen hat (cf. Deut. 21,23), bekennst du nicht als Glaubenswahrheit, da er ja auch Jesus betreffen würde; ebensowenig dazu, dass auch der zu den Verfluchten gehört, der seinen Samen nicht erweckt hat in Israel (Agraph.Nr. 31; cf. Deut. 25,7 ff.), da damit ja auch alle Jungfrauen und Kinder Gottes mitgemeint wären; auch nicht dazu, dass einer, der am Fleisch seiner Vorhaut nicht beschnitten ist, aus dem Stammesverband ausgemerzt werden soll (cf. Gen. 17,14), da dies ja auch jeden Christen betreffen würde; oder dass zu Tode gesteinigt werden soll, wer den Sabbat gebrochen hat (cf. Num. 15,35); oder dass keiner zu schonen sei, der ein beliebiges Gebot des Alten Testaments gebrochen hat: wenn du all das glaubtest und dir sicher wärest, dass es Gebote Gottes sind, dann, glaube mir, hättest du als erster Gewalt gegen Christus angewendet, und wärest jetzt nicht erbittert über die Juden, weil sie ihn mit Zorn und Gewalt verfolgten und so die Gebote ihres Gottes erfüllten.

Since you hold to the divine authorship of the Old as well as of the New Testament, it would surely be more consistent and more becoming, as you do not obey its precepts, to confess that it has been corrupted by improper additions, than to treat it so contemptuously, if it is genuine and uncorrupted. Accordingly, my explanation of your neglect of the requirements of the Old Testament has always been, and still is, that you are either wise enough to reject them as spurious, or that you have the boldness and irreverence to disregard them if they are true. At any rate, when you would oblige me to believe everything contained in the documents of the New Testament because I receive the Testament itself, you should consider that, though you profess to receive the Old Testament, you in your heart disbelieve many things in it. Thus, you do not admit as true or authoritative the declaration of the Old Testament, that every one that hangeth on a tree is accursed, ¹ for this would apply to Jesus; or that every man is accursed who does not raise up seed in Israel, ² for that would include all of both sexes devoted to God; or that whoever is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin will be cut off from among his people, ³ for that would apply to all Christians; or that whoever breaks the Sabbath must be stoned to death; ⁴ or that no mercy should be shown to the man who breaks a single precept of the Old Testament. If you really believe these things as certainly enjoined by God, you would, in the time of Christ, have been the first to assail Him, and you would now have no quarrel with the Jews, who, in persecuting Christ with heart and soul, acted in obedience to their own God.
