Chapter XXVII.--He Grieves that He Was So Long Without God.

38. Too late did I love Thee, O Fairness, so ancient, and yet so new! Too late did I love Thee! For behold, Thou wert within, and I without, and there did I seek Thee; I, unlovely, rushed heedlessly among the things of beauty Thou madest. ¹ Thou wert with me, but I was not with Thee. Those things kept me far from Thee, which, unless they were in Thee, were not. Thou calledst, and criedst aloud, and forcedst open my deafness. Thou didst gleam and shine, and chase away my blindness. Thou didst exhale odours, and I drew in my breath and do pant after Thee. I tasted, and do hunger and thirst. Thou didst touch me, and I burned for Thy peace.

27. Von der hinreißenden Wirkung der Schönheit Gottes.

Spät habe ich dich geliebt, o Schönheit, so alt und doch immer neu, spät habe ich dich geliebt. Und siehe, du warst in meinem Innern und ich draußen; und draußen suchte ich dich und stürzte mich in meiner Häßlichkeit auf die schönen Gebilde, die du geschaffen. Du warst bei mir, aber ich nicht bei dir. Weit weg von dir zog mich, was doch keinen Bestand hätte, wenn es nicht in dir wäre. Du hast mich laut gerufen und meine Taubheit zerrissen; du hast geblitzt und geleuchtet und meine Blindheit verscheucht. Du hast mir süßen Duft S. 245 zugeweht; ich habe ihn eingesogen, und nun seufze ich nach dir. Ich habe dich geschmeckt, und nun hungere und dürste ich nach dir. Du hast mich berührt, und ich bin entbrannt in deinem Frieden.
