Chapter 4.--That Proofs of the Last Judgment Will Be Adduced, First from the New Testament, and Then from the Old.

The proofs, then, of this last judgment of God which I propose to adduce shall be drawn first from the New Testament, and then from the Old. For although the Old Testament is prior in point of time, the New has the precedence in intrinsic value; for the Old acts the part of herald to the New. We shall therefore first cite passages from the New Testament, and confirm them by quotations from the Old Testament. The Old contains the law and the prophets, the New the gospel and the apostolic epistles. Now the apostle says "By the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; now the righteousness of God is by faith of Jesus Christ upon all them that believe." ¹ This righteousness of God belongs to the New Testament, and evidence for it exists in the old books, that is to say, in the law and the prophets. I shall first, then state the case, and then call the witnesses. This order Jesus Christ Himself directs us to observe, saying, "The scribe instructed in the kingdom of God is like a good householder, bringing out of his treasure things new and old." ² He did not say "old and new," which He certainly would have said had He not wished to follow the order of merit rather than that of time.

4. Der Verfasser wird in den Ausführungen über das Jüngste Gericht die Zeugnisse aus dem Neuen Testamente denen aus dem Alten voranstellen.

Die Beweisstellen für dieses Jüngste Gericht Gottes, die ich anzuführen gedenke, sind zunächst aus den Büchern des Neuen Testamentes zu wählen, dann erst aus denen des Alten. Obgleich nämlich die alten Zeugnisse der Zeit nach vorangehen, sind doch die neuen der Würdigkeit nach überzuordnen, weil die alten nur Ankündigungen der neuen sind. Es sollen also die neuen zuerst angeführt und zu ihrer Bekräftigung dann auch die alten aufgerufen werden. Zu den alten gehören Gesetz und Propheten, zu den neuen Evangelium und apostolische Schriften. Der Apostel sagt aber¹: „Denn durch das Gesetz kommt die Erkenntnis der Sünde. Jetzt dagegen ist ohne Gesetz die Gerechtigkeit Gottes geoffenbart worden, bezeugt durch Gesetz und Propheten; die Gerechtigkeit Gottes nämlich durch den Glauben an Jesus Christus für alle, die an ihn glauben.“ Diese Gerechtigkeit Gottes ist dem Neuen Testament eigentümlich und erhält Bezeugung von Seiten der alten Bücher, d. i. von Gesetz und Propheten. Zunächst muß man also den Gegenstand vorlegen, dann erst sind die Band 28, S. 1222Zeugen einzuführen. Diese Ordnung hat auch Christus Jesus selbst zu beobachten angeleitet, als er sagte²: „Ein im Reiche Gottes wohl unterrichteter Schriftgelehrter ist ähnlich einem Hausvater, der aus seinem Schatze Neues und Altes hervorholt.“ Er sagt nicht „Altes und Neues“, wie er doch hätte sagen müssen, wenn er sich nicht lieber an die Ordnung der Gewichtigkeit als an die der Zeit hätte halten wollen.
