CHAPITRE PREMIER. SELON FAUSTE, OU LES PATRIARCHES ET LES PROPHÈTES ONT ÉTÉ CRIMINELS OÙ LES ÉCRIVAINS SACRÉS SONT DES FAUSSAIRES.

Fauste. Pourquoi blasphémez-vous la loi et les Prophètes? - Nous n'avons aucune intention hostile, nous ne sommes nullement les ennemis de la loi ni des Prophètes, ni de personne au monde; à tel point que si vous y consentez, nous déclarerons faux tout ce qui a été écrit sur eux et nous les a rendus odieux. Mais vous n'y consentez pas, et en acceptant les dires de vos écrivains, vous accusez peut-être des Prophètes innocents, vous diffamez les Patriarches, vous déshonorez la loi, et, ce qu'il y a de plus insensé encore, vous prétendez d'une part que vos écrivains ne sont cependant pas menteurs, et, de l'autre, vous tenez pour hommes religieux et saints ceux dont ils ont raconté les crimes et la coupable conduite. Or, ces deux choses ne peuvent se concilier à la fois, il faut ou que ceux-ci aient été méchants, ou que ceux-là aient été des menteurs et des faussaires.

Faustus said: You ask why we blaspheme the law and the prophets. We are so far from professing or feeling any hostility to the law and the prophets, that we are ready, if you will allow us, to declare the falsehood of all the writings which make the law and the prophets appear objectionable. But this you refuse to admit, and by maintaining the authority of your writers, you bring a perhaps unmerited reproach upon the prophets; you slander the patriarchs, and dishonor the law. You are so unreasonable as to deny that your writers are false, while you uphold the piety and sanctity of those who are described in these writings as guilty of the worst crimes, and as leading wicked lives. These opinions are inconsistent; for either these were bad characters, or the writers were untruthful.
