Du reste, il n'est pas blâmable et criminel au point de mériter le torrent d'injures que vomit à cette occasion Fauste aveuglé par sa haine. En effet, si on consulte la loi éternelle qui ordonne de maintenir l'ordre naturel et défend de le troubler, elle ne condamnera pas cette action comme si Loth eût brûlé d'une coupable passion pour ses filles, jusqu'à commettre l'inceste avec elles ou à les prendre pour femmes; ou comme si elles-mêmes eussent éprouvé une abominable convoitise à l'égard de leur père. La raison veut, la justice exige qu'on ne se contente pas de voir ce qui s'est fait, mais qu'on recherche le motif qui a fait agir, afin de juger avec équité les effets d'après leurs causes. Or, les filles de Loth désirant perpétuer leur famille (désir certainement honnête et conforme à la nature) et croyant d'ailleurs qu'elles ne pourraient plus trouver d'autres hommes pour époux, comme si l'incendie eût détruit le monde entier (elles n'avaient pu mesurer l'étendue de ses ravages) : dans cette persuasion, dis-je, elles songèrent à user de leur père. Sans doute, elles devaient plutôt renoncer à être mères qu'user ainsi de leur père ; cependant, il y a une grande différence entre agir par un tel motif ou céder à une si coupable convoitise.

At the same time there is in this transaction no reason for the torrent of abuse which Faustus' blind hostility discharges on it. By the eternal law which requires the preservation of the order of nature and condemns its violation, the judgment in this case is not what it would have been if Lot had been prompted by a criminal passion to commit incest with his daughters, or if they had been inflamed with unnatural desires. In justice, we must ask not only what was done, but with what motive, in order to obtain a fair view of the action as the effect of that motive. The resolution of Lot's daughters to lie with their father was the effect of the natural desire for offspring in order to preserve the race; for they supposed that there were no other men to be found, thinking that the whole world had been consumed in that conflagration, which, for all they knew, had left no one alive but themselves. It would have been better for them never to have been mothers, than to have become mothers by their own father. But still, the fulfillment of a desire like this is very different from the accursed gratification of lust.
