Quietus of Burug 1 said: "We who live by faith ought with believing observance to obey what has been before foretold for our instruction. For it is written in Solomon, He that is washed by one dead, what availeth his washing?' 2 Which assuredly he says of those who are washed by heretics, and of those who wash. For if they who are baptized among them receive eternal life through the remission of their sins, why do they come to the Church? But if no salvation is received from a dead person, and they therefore, acknowledging their former error, return with penance to the truth, they ought to be sanctified with the one life-giving baptism which is in the Catholic Church." 3

« Nous qui vivons de la foi, nous devons observer fidèlement les instructions que l’antiquité nous a transmises. Salomon nous adresse ces paroles : Celui qui est baptisé par un mort, à quoi peut lui servir cette ablution (Eccli., XXXIV, 30 )? L’auteur parle évidemment de ceux qui sont baptisés par les hérétiques qui confèrent le baptême. D’ailleurs, si le baptême donné par les hérétiques confère la rémission des péchés, et par là même la vie éternelle, pourquoi ceux qui l’ont reçu demandent-ils à entrer dans l’Eglise? Au contraire, si le baptême donné par un mort est inutile au salut, je comprends que, sentant leur erreur première, ils s’abandonnent au repentir et reviennent à la vérité; mais alors il est de toute évidence qu’ils doivent être sanctifiés par le baptême de vie, lequel ne se trouve que dans l’Eglise catholique».
