Sermo 10, aduersus quinque haereses.
5. Ex Vetere Testamento adversus [P. 1104]Judaeos.
Quid dicit Judaeus?

Against Five Heresies
5. From the Old Testament against [P. 1104] the Jews.
What does the Jew say? We have one God, besides him we know no other. But the one you call Christ, our fathers did not kill as God, but as a man. Indeed, this is what I said: Would that men recognized the savior as demons do! Behold, demons saw and trembled: men saw and killed. Demons confessed: men persecuted. What misfortune and how great misery it is to be found unequal even to demons? Again, men believe, demons perish: men are saved, demons are punished. But this change is the grace of the right hand of the Most High 1? again, Behold, a child is born to us, and a son is given to us: and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Father of the future age, Prince of peace 2? again, Behold, a virgin shall conceive in the womb, and shall bear a son; and his name shall be called Emmanuel 3? Someone says, When you intended to contend with the Manichaean, not with the Jew. Against the Manichaean, new weapons are necessary, not old ones. Why? Because he accepts the New, not the Old Testament. [P. 1107] But for me, who has undertaken the struggle against both, weapons are necessary from all sides; especially since these new ones are made from the old: therefore, neither should those be discarded, and these should be carried. For different adversaries are cut down by different weapons. Therefore, this order must be maintained, that speaking of the Gospel, I do not remain silent about the Prophets.
