1. Ἔτι οὖν καὶ περὶ τοῦ σαββάτου γέγραπταιἐν τοῖς δέκα λόγοις, ἐν οἷς ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ ὄρει1 Σινᾶ πρὸς Μωϋσῆν κατὰ πρόσωπον· Καὶ ἁγιάσατετὸ σάββατον κυρίου χερσὶν καθαραῖς καὶκαρδίᾳ καθαρᾷ. 2. καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει· Ἐὰν[P. 394]() 2 φυλάξωσιν οἱ υἱοί μου τὸ σάββατον, τότε ἐπιθήσωτὸ ἔλεός μου ἐπ̓ αὐτούς. 3. τὸ σάββατον λέγει3 ἐν ἀρχῇ τῆς κτίσεως· Καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς ἐνἓξ ἡμέραις τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνετέλεσενἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ καὶ κατέπαυσεν ἐν4 αὐτῇ καὶ ἡγίασεν αὐτήν. 4. προσέχετε, τέκνα, τίλέγει τὸ συνετέλεσεν ἐν ἓξ ἡμέραις. τοῦτο λέγει,ὅτι ἐν ἑξακισχιλίοις ἔτεσιν συντελέσει κύριοςτὰ σύμπαντα· ἡ γὰρ ἡμέρα παῤ αὐτῷ σημαίνει5 χίλια ἔτη. αὐτὸς δέ μοι μαρτυρεῖ λέγων· Ἰδού,ἡμέρα κυρίου ἔσται ὡς χίλια ἔτη. οὐκοῦν, τέκνα,ἐν ἓξ ἡμέραις, ἐν τοῖς ἑξακισχιλίοις ἔτεσιν συντελεσθήσεται6 τὰ σύμπαντα. 5. Καὶ κατέπαυσεντῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ. τοῦτο λέγει· ὅταν ἐλθὼνὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ καταργήσει τὸν καιρὸν τοῦ ἀνόμουκαὶ κρινεῖ τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς καὶ ἀλλάξει τὸν ἥλιονκαὶ τὴν σελήνην καὶ τοὺς ἀστέρας, τότε καλῶς7 καταπαύσεται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ. 6. πέραςγέ τοι λέγει· Ἁγιάσεις αὐτὴν χερσὶν καθαραῖςκαὶ καρδίᾳ καθαρᾷ. εἰ οὖν ἣν ὁ θεὸς ἡμέρανἡγίασεν νῦν τις δύναται ἁγιάσαι καθαρὸς ὢν τῇκαρδίᾳ, ἐν πᾶσιν πεπλανήμεθα. 7. ἴδε ὅτι ἄρατότε καλῶς καταπαυόμενοι ἁγιάσομεν αὐτήν, ὅτεδυνησόμεθα αὐτοὶ δικαιωθέντες καὶ ἀπολαβόντεςτὴν ἐπαγγελίαν, μηκέτι οὔσης τῆς ἀνομίας, καινῶνδὲ γεγονότων πάντων ὑπὸ κυρίου· τότε δυνησόμεθααὐτὴν ἁγιάσαι, αὐτοὶ ἁγιασθέντες πρῶτον.8 8. πέρας γέ τοι λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τὰς νεομηνίας ὑμῶνκαὶ τὰ σάββατα οὐκ ἀνέχομαι. ὁρᾶτε, πῶς λέγει;οὐ τὰ νῦν σάββατα ἐμοὶ δεκτά, ἀλλὰ ὃ πεποίηκα,ἐν ᾧ καταπαύσας τὰ πάντα ἀρχὴν ἡμέρας ὀγδόηςP. 396 ποιήσω, ὅ ἐστιν ἄλλου κόσμου ἀρχήν. 9. διὸκαὶ ἄγομεν τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν ὀγδόην εἰς εὐφροσύνην,ἐν ᾗ καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶφανερωθεὶς ἀνέβη εἰς οὐρανούς.

Chapter XV.--The false and the true Sabbath.
Further, 1 also, it is written concerning the Sabbath in the Decalogue which [the Lord] spoke, face to face, to Moses on Mount Sinai, "And sanctify ye the Sabbath of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart." 2 And He says in another place, "If my sons keep the Sabbath, then will I cause my mercy to rest upon them." 3 The Sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of the creation [thus]: "And God made in six days the works of His hands, and made an end on the seventh day, and rested on it, and sanctified it." 4 Attend, my children, to the meaning of this expression, "He finished in six days." This implieth that the Lord will finish all things in six thousand years, for a day is 5 with Him a thousand years. And He Himself testifieth, 6 saying, "Behold, to-day 7 will be as a thousand years." 8 Therefore, my children, in six days, that is, in six thousand years, all things will be finished. "And He rested on the seventh day." This meaneth: when His Son, coming [again], shall destroy the time of the wicked man, 9 and judge the ungodly, and change the sun, and the moon, 10 and the stars, then shall He truly rest on the seventh day. Moreover, He says, "Thou shalt sanctify it with pure hands and a pure heart." If, therefore, any one can now sanctify the day which God hath sanctified, except he is pure in heart in all things, 11 we are deceived. 12 Behold, therefore: 13 certainly then one properly resting sanctifies it, when we ourselves, having received the promise, wickedness no longer existing, and all things having been made new by the Lord, shall be able to work righteousness. 14 Then we shall be able to sanctify it, having been first sanctified ourselves. 15 Further, He says to them, "Your new moons and your Sabbaths I cannot endure." 16 Ye perceive how He speaks: Your present Sabbaths are not acceptable to Me, but that is which I have made, [namely this,] when, giving rest to all things, I shall make a beginning of the eighth day, that is, a beginning of another world. Wherefore, also, we keep the eighth day with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead. 17 And 18 when He had manifested Himself, He ascended into the heavens.
