Ayant passé tout le jour dans cette appréhension, nous sortîmes le soir et trouvâmes ces chameaux (auxquels ils donnent en ce pays le nom de dromadaires à causé de leur extffin1e vitesse) qui ruminaient. Nous montâmes dessus, et, après avoir repris un peu de forcé avec quelques grains nouveaux, nous traversâmes le désert et' arrivâmes enfin le dixième jour au camp des Romains, où, ayant été présentés au maître de camp, nous lui contâmes tout ce qui nous était arrivé. De là, étant envoyés à Sabinien qui commandait en Mésopotamie, nous y vendîmes nos chameaux. Et parce que mon abbé, dont j'ai ci-devant parlé, était déjà mort pour aller jouir avec Dieu d'une meilleure vie, je retournai avec les solitaires qu'il avait laissés; et mis cette femme entre les mains de quelques vierges très vertueuses, l'aimant comme ma soeur, et vivant néanmoins avec elle avec plus de menue que si elle eût été ma soeur.

Malc, étant déjà fort vieux, me contait ces choses lorsque j'étais encore fort jeune, et je vous les conte dans ma vieillesse. Je présente aux chastes un exemple célèbre de chasteté, et j'exhorte les vierges à la conserver. Contez cette histoire à ceux qui viendront après vous, afin qu'ils sachent qu'au milieu même des épées, des déserts et des bêtes farouches, la chasteté n'est jamais captive; et qu'un véritable serviteur de Jésus-Christ peut bien être tué, mais non pas vaincu.

At last we got rid of our fright; and when that day was spent, we sallied forth towards evening, and saw the camels, on account of their great speed called dromedaries, quietly chewing the cud. We mounted, and with the strength gained from the new supply of grain, after ten days travelling through the desert arrived at the Roman camp. After being presented to the tribune we told all, and from thence were sent to Sabianus, who commanded in Mesopotamia, where we sold our camels. My dear old abbot was now sleeping in the Lord; I betook myself therefore to this place, and returned to the monastic life, while I entrusted my companion here to the care of the virgins; for though I loved her as a sister, I did not commit myself to her as if she were my sister.

Malchus was an old man, I a youth, when he told me these things. I who have related them to you am now old, and I have set them forth as a history of chastity for the chaste. Virgins, I exhort you, guard your chastity. Tell the story to them that come after, that they may realize that in the midst of swords, and wild beasts of the desert, virtue is never a captive, and that he who is devoted to the service of Christ may die, but cannot be conquered.
