Dies möge als kurze Antwort an Faustus genügen, um die Lebensführung der Patriarchen und Propheten aus der Sicht unserer Kleinen (cf. 255,20) zu verteidigen; zu ihnen möchte ich mich selber zählen, wo ich doch das Leben der Heiligen des Alten Testaments nicht kritisiere, auch wenn ich nicht immer zu deuten vermag, welchen Symbolwert das Leben jener Menschen besass, das uns die Apostel in ihrem Evangelium mit so hohem Lob verkündeten, während diese umgekehrt in ihrer Prophetie die zukünftigen Apostel ankündigen, sodass also die beiden Testamente wie die zwei Seraphim einander zuriefen (cf. Is. 6,3): Heilig, heilig, heilig ist Gott, der Herr der Heere. Falls aber Faustus dazu übergehen wird, die Patriarchen und Propheten nicht mehr mit allgemeiner und unbestimmter Kritik anzuschuldigen, wie er es hier tat, sondern gezielt ihre Taten vorzubringen, dann wird mir Gott der Herr, der zugleich ihr wie unser Gott ist, dabei helfen, auf die einzelnen Vorwürfe passend und treffend zu antworten (cf. B.XXII). So aber überschüttet der Manichäer Faustus jene Menschen mit Tadel, der Apostel Paulus aber mit Lob; ein jeder möge wählen, wem er glauben will!

Reply to Faustus the Manichaean

This is a brief reply to Faustus in behalf of the character of the patriarchs and prophets. It is the reply of the babes of our faith, among whom I would reckon myself, inasmuch as I would not find fault with the life of the ancient saints, even if I did not understand its mystical character. Their life is proclaimed to us with approval by the apostles in their Gospel, as they themselves in their prophecy foretold the future apostles, that the two Testaments, like the seraphim, might cry to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts." 1 When Faustus, instead of the vague general accusation which he makes here, condemns particular actions in the lives of the patriarchs and the prophets, the Lord their God, and ours also, will assist me to reply suitably and appropriately to the separate charges. For the present, the reader must choose whether to believe the commendation of the Apostle Paul or the accusations of Faustus the Manichaean. 2
