Gegen Faustus

Unsere Kirche aber, welche die Lehre des Apostels vor der Falschheit der Schlange, die dich verdorben hat, warnt, weil sie diese als reine Jungfrau zu Christus hinführen will (cf. II Kor. 11,2), diese Kirche anerkennt den Gott der Propheten als den wahren Gott, als ihren Gott. Seiner Endverheissung (438,10) glaubt sie ohne Sorge, nachdem sie schon so viele seiner Verheissungen erfüllt sieht; und niemand behauptet, sie habe die Propheten, auf die sie sich in den Schriften der Juden beruft, nach Kenntnis der Gegenwart selber erfunden. Was gibt es Unglaublicheres als die Verheissung, die Abraham empfangen hat (gen. 22,18): In deinem Nachkommen werden alle Völker gesegnet sein? Und welche Verheissung ist deutlicher in Erfüllung gegangen als diese? Und dies ist gewiss die Endverheissung, die der Prophet kurz in folgende Worte fasst (Ps. 83,5): Glückselig, die wohnen in deinem Haus; sie werden dich preisen in alle Ewigkeit. Denn wenn einmal aller Mangel zu Ende, und der letzte Feind, der Tod, entmachtet sein wird (cf. I Kor. 15,26), wird ihnen in sorglosem Dasein das immerwährende Lob Gottes obliegen, und keiner wird hier mehr hinzukommen, und keiner wird von hier weggehen. Dies beschreibt der Prophet an anderer Stelle mit folgenden Worten (Ps. 147,1 f.): Lobe, Jerusalem, den Herrn, preise deinen Gott, Sion, denn er verstärkte die Riegel deiner Tore, er segnete deine Kinder, die in dir wohnen. Wenn die Tore geschlossen sind, wird niemand eintreten, niemand wird hinausgehen. Ähnlich sagt auch der Bräutigam selber im Evangelium zu den törichten Jungfrauen, die noch anklopfen, dass er ihnen nicht öffnen werde (cf. Mt. 25,11 f.). Dieses Jerusalem, die heilige Kirche, die Braut Christi, wird in der Apokalypse des Johannes noch beredter und ausführlicher beschrieben. Und die reine Jungfrau würde jener prophetischen Verheissung (Ps. 147,1 f.) kaum Glauben schenken, wenn sie nicht bereits erfüllt sähe, was ihr durch dieselbe Prophetie für die jetzige Zeit vorhergesagt wurde (Ps. 44,11 ff.): Höre Tochter, sieh her und neige dein Ohr und vergiss dein Volk und das Haus deines Vaters. Denn der König verlangt nach deiner Schönheit, er ist ja dein Gott, und die Töchter von Tyrus werden ihn mit ihren Gaben verehren; deinem Antlitz werden huldigen die Reichen des Volkes. Die ganze Herrlichkeit der Königstochter kommt von innen, sie ist in bunter Pracht umhüllt mit goldenen Quasten; es werden zum König geführt die Jungfrauen in ihrem Gefolge, ihre Freundinnen werden zu dir geführt, unter Jubel und Freude werden sie zum Tempel des Königs geleitet. An Stelle deiner Väter werden dir Söhne geboren, du wirst sie zu Fürsten machen über das ganze Land; sie werden deiner eingedenk bleiben Generation für Generation; darum werden die Völker dich lobpreisen auf ewig und für alle Zeiten. Du aber, du Unglückselige, die du von der Schlange verdorben wurdest, wann endlich willst du auch nur darüber nachzudenken, was denn diese Schönheit der Königstochter, die von innen kommt (ib. 14) eigentlich ist? Damit ist nämlich die Reinheit des Denkens gemeint, etwas was bei dir so verdorben ist, dass dir die Augen nur aufgingen (cf. Gen. 3,7), um Sonne und Mond zu verehren, als ob du durch das gerechte Urteil Gottes vom Baum des Lebens – was nichts anderes bedeutet als die ewige und innerliche Weisheit –, verstossen wärest, und nichts anderes mehr als Wahrheit und Weisheit bezeichnen und betrachten könntest als jenes Licht, das du mit zugekniffenen Augen aufnimmst, ins Unermessliche vergrösserst, in mythischen Bildern endlos abwandelst und in deinem schamlosen Geist hin und her wälzest. Das sind deine durch und durch verabscheuungswürdigen Hurereien! Und trotzdem sagt die Wahrheit geduldig: Denk darüber nach und kehre zu mir zurück. Kehre zu mir zurück und du wirst geläutert werden; du wirst wieder heil werden, wenn du über dich selbst erschrickst und in meine Arme kommst. Hör darauf, das sagt die echte Wahrheit, die nicht in vorgetäuschten Gestalten mit dem Volk der Finsternis kämpfte, und die dich nicht vorgetäuschtem Blut loskaufte

She whom the apostle warns against the guile of the serpent by which thou hast been corrupted, that he may present her as a chaste virgin to Christ, her only husband, acknowledges the God of the prophets as the true God, and her own God. So many of His promises have already been fulfilled to her, that she looks confidently for the fulfillment of the rest. Nor can any one say that these prophecies have been forged to suit the present time, for they are found in the books of the Jews. What could be more unlikely than that all nations should be blessed in Abraham's seed, as it was promised? And yet how plainly is this promise now fulfilled! The last promise is made in the following short prophecy: "Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house: they shall ever praise Thee." ¹ When trial is past, and death, the last enemy, is destroyed, there will be rest in the constant occupation of praising God, where there shall be no arrivals and no departures. So the prophet says elsewhere: "Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem; celebrate thy God, O Zion: for He hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; He hath blessed thy children within thee." ² The gates are shut, so that none can go in or out. The Bridegroom Himself says in the Gospel, that He will not open to the foolish virgins though they knock. This Jerusalem, the holy Church, the bride of Christ, is described fully in the Revelation of John. And that which commends the promises of future bliss to the belief of this chaste virgin is, that now she is in possession of what was foretold of her by the same prophets. For she is thus described: "Hearken, O daughter, and regard, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house. For the King hath greatly desired thy beauty; and He is thy God. The daughters of Tyre shall worship Him with gifts; the rich among the people shall entreat thy favor. The daughter of the King is all glorious within; her clothing is of wrought gold. The virgins following her shall be brought unto the King: her companions shall be brought unto thee; with gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought into the temple of the King. Instead of thy fathers, children shall be born to thee, whom thou shall make princes over all the earth. Thy name shall be remembered to all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever." ³ Unhappy victim of the serpent's guile, the inward beauty of the daughter of the King is not for thee even to think of. For this purity of mind is that which thou hast lost in opening thine eyes to love and worship the sun and moon. And so by the just judgment of God thou art estranged from the tree of life, which is eternal and internal wisdom; and with thee nothing is called or accounted truth or wisdom but that light which enters the eyes opened to evil, and which in thy impure mind expands and shapes itself into fanciful images. These are thy abominable whoredoms. Still the truth calls on thee to reflect and return. Return to me, and thou shall be cleansed and restored, if thy shame leads thee to repentance. Hear these words of the true Truth, who neither with feigned shapes fought against the race of darkness, nor with feigned blood redeemed thee.
