Another year, again, when he was setting out to visit the monasteries and was drawing up a list of those with whom he must stay and whom he must see in passing, the monks knowing that one of their number was a niggard, and being at the same time desirous to cure his complaint, asked the saint to stay with him. He replied, “Do you wish me to inflict injury on you and annoyance on the brother?” The niggardly brother on hearing of this was ashamed, and with the strenuous support of all his brethren, at length obtained from the saint a reluctant promise to put his monastery on the roll of his resting places. Ten days after they came to him and found the keepers already on guard in the vineyard through which their course lay, to keep off all comers with stones and clods and slings. In the morning they all departed without having eaten a grape, while the old man smiled and pretended not to know what had happened.

Une autre année, lorsqu'il était prêt d'aller visiter les monastères, et faisait un mémoire de ceux chez qui il voulait demeurer et de ceux qu'il ne voulait voir qu'en passant, les frères, sachant qu'entre les autres solitaires il y en avait un qui était trop bon ménager, et désirant le corriger de ce vice, le priaient de le mettre au nombre de ceux chez lesquels il s'arrêterait. Il leur répondit : « Pourquoi voulez-vous que je lui fasse peine et que je vous fasse tort par même moyen? » Ce solitaire trop bon ménager, ayant su cela et en ayant honte, obtint avec grande difficulté d'Hilarion , à l'instance de tous les autres frères, que son monastère fût mis au nombre de ceux où il devait s'arrêter. Dix jours après ils y arrivèrent, et trouvèrent des gardes disposés par toute sa vigne, qui, jetant des pierres et des mottes, empêchaient que l'on n'en approchât. Ainsi ils partirent le lendemain matin sans avoir mangé une seule grappe de raisin, le vieillard n'en faisant que rire et feignant d'ignorer ce qui s'était passé.
