The City of God

Chapter 16.--Concerning the Reward of the Holy Citizens of the Celestial City, to Whom the Example of the Virtues of the Romans are Useful.

But the reward of the saints is far different, who even here endured reproaches for that city of God which is hateful to the lovers of this world. That city is eternal. There none are born, for none die. There is true and full felicity,--not a goddess, but a gift of God. Thence we receive the pledge of faith whilst on our pilgrimage we sigh for its beauty. There rises not the sun on the good and the evil, but the Sun of Righteousness protects the good alone. There no great industry shall be expended to enrich the public treasury by suffering privations at home, for there is the common treasury of truth. And, therefore, it was not only for the sake of recompensing the citizens of Rome that her empire and glory had been so signally extended, but also that the citizens of that eternal city, during their pilgrimage here, might diligently and soberly contemplate these examples, and see what a love they owe to the supernal country on account of life eternal, if the terrestrial country was so much beloved by its citizens on account of human glory.

CHAPITRE XVI.

DE LA RÉCOMPENSE DES CITOYENS DE LA CITÉ ÉTERNELLE, A QUI PEUT ÊTRE UTILE L’EXEMPLE DES VERTUS DES ROMAINS.

Mais il n’en est pas de même de la récompense de ceux qui souffrent ici-bas pour la Cité de Dieu, objet de haine à ceux qui aiment le monde. Cette Cité est éternelle; personne n’y prend naissance, parce que personne n’y meurt; là règne la véritable et parfaite félicité, qui n’est point une déesse, mais un don de Dieu. C’est de là que nous avons reçu le gage de la foi, nous qui passons le temps de notre pèlerinage à soupirer pour la beauté de ce divin séjour. Là, le soleil ne se lève point sur les bons et sur les méchants, mais le Soleil de justice n’y éclaire que les bons. Là, on ne sera point en peine d’enrichir le trésor public aux dépens de sa fortune privée, parce qu’il n’y a qu’un trésor de vérité commun à tous. Aussi ce n’a pas été seulement pour récompenser les Romains de leurs vertus que leur empire a été porté à un si haut point de grandeur et de gloire, mais aussi pour servir d’exemple aux citoyens de cette Cité éternelle et leur faire comprendre combien ils doivent aimer la céleste patrie en vue de la vie éternelle, puisqu’une patrie terrestre a été, pour une gloire tout humaine, tant aimée de ses enfants.
