XV.
Eh bien! Pythagoriciens, Stoïciens, et toi aussi, Platon, apprenez tous d'où la matière, que vous faites innée, a pris son origine et sa substance dans ce vaste assemblage de l'univers, mystère que Mercure-Trismégiste lui-même, maître de tous les physiciens, n'a pu pénétrer. Tu viens d'entendre nommer la Conversion, autre espèce de Passion: c'est d'elle, assure-t-on, qu'a été formée l'ame de ce monde, l'ame elle-même du Démiurgue, c'est-à-dire l'ame de notre Dieu. Tu connais le Chagrin et la Crainte: ce sont eux qui ont donné naissance à toutes les autres créatures; car la masse des eaux est venue des larmes d'Achamoth. Il est facile d'apprécier l'étendue de sa calamité par la multiplicité des eaux qui jaillirent d'elle. Elle en eut de salées, elle en eut d'amères, de douces, de chaudes, de froides, de bitumineuses, de ferrugineuses, de sulphureuses, d'empoisonnées; de sorte que la source de Nonacris qui tua Alexandre, lui emprunta son venin, ainsi que celle de Lynceste, qui produit l'ivresse, et celle de Salmacis, qui amollit le courage. C'est Achamoth qui a versé les pluies du ciel en poussant des cris; ce sont des douleurs et des larmes étrangères que nous prenons soin de conserver dans nos citernes. De même les éléments corporels ont été tirés de sa consternation et de sa frayeur. Toutefois, au milieu de son immense solitude, dans la vaste étendue de son abandon, elle riait de temps en temps, au souvenir qu'elle avait vu le Christ: de la joie de son sourire rayonna la lumière. Pourquoi ce bienfait de la Providence qui la forçait à sourire? Etait-ce pour que l'homme ne vécût pas toujours ici-bas dans les ténèbres? Ne t'étonne pas que de sa joie ait jailli pour le monde un élément si lumineux, puisque de sa tristesse est émané pour le monde un agent si nécessaire. O rire qui illumine! ô larme qui arrose! Achamoth cependant avait là un remède à l'horreur de sa retraite. Toutes les fois qu'elle voulait en dissiper l'obscurité, elle n'avait qu'à sourire, ne fût-ce même que pour ne pas invoquer ceux qui l'avaient abandonnée.

Chapter XV.--Strange Account of the Origin of Matter, from the Various Affections of Achamoth. The Waters from Her Tears; Light from Her Smile.
Well, now, the Pythagoreans may learn, the Stoics may know, Plato himself (may discover), whence Matter, which they will have to be unborn, derived both its origin and substance for all this pile of the world--(a mystery) which not even the renowned 1 Mercurius Trismegistus, master (as he was) of all physical philosophy, thought out. 2 You have just heard of "Conversion," one element in the "Passion" (we have so often mentioned). Out of this the whole life of the world, 3 and even that of the Demiurge himself, our God, is said to have had its being. Again, you have heard of "sorrow" and "fear." From these all other created things 4 took their beginning. For from her 5 tears flowed the entire mass of waters. From this circumstance one may form an idea of the calamity 6 which she encountered, so vast were the kinds of the tears wherewith she overflowed. She had salt tear-drops, she had bitter, and sweet, and warm, and cold, and bituminous, and ferruginous, and sulphurous, and even 7 poisonous, so that the Nonacris exuded therefrom which killed Alexander; and the river of the Lyncestae 8 flowed from the same source, which produces drunkenness; and the Salmacis 9 was derived from the same source, which renders men effeminate. The rains of heaven Achamoth whimpered forth, 10 and we on our part are anxiously employed in saving up in our cisterns the very wails and tears of another. In like manner, from the "consternation" and "alarm" (of which we have also heard), bodily elements were derived. And yet amidst so many circumstances of solitude, in this vast prospect of destitution, she occasionally smiled at the recollection of the sight of Christ, and from this smile of joy light flashed forth. How great was this beneficence of Providence, which induced her to smile, and all that we might not linger for ever in the dark! Nor need you feel astonished how 11 from her joy so splendid an element 12 could have beamed upon the world, when from her sadness even so necessary a provision 13 flowed forth for man. O illuminating smile! O irrigating tear! And yet it might now have acted as some alleviation amidst the horror of her situation; for she might have shaken off all the obscurity thereof as often as she had a mind to smile, even not to be obliged to turn suppliant to those who had deserted her. 14
