CHAPITRE XLIX

LES ÉLUS ET LES RÉPROUVÉS SONT MÊLÉS EN SEMBLE ICI-BAS.

Dans ce siècle pervers, en ces tristes jours où l’Eglise, par des humiliations passagères, s’acquiert une grandeur immortelle pour l’avenir et est exercée par une infinité de craintes, de douleurs, de travaux et de tentations, sans avoir d’autre joie que l’espérance, si elle se réjouit comme il faut, beaucoup de réprouvés sont mêlés avec les élus, et les uns et les autres renfermés en quelque sorte dans ce filet de l’Evangile¹, nagent pêle-mêle à travers l’océan du monde, jusqu’à ce que tous arrivent au rivage, où les méchants seront séparés des bons, alors que Dieu habitera dans les bons comme dans son temple, pour y être tout en tous². Ainsi, nous voyons s’accomplir cette parole de celui qui disait dans le psaume: « J’ai publié et annoncé partout, et ils se sont « multipliés sans nombre³ ». C’est ce qui arrive maintenant, depuis qu’il a publié et annoncé, d’abord par la bouche de Jean-Baptiste son précurseur⁴ et en second lieu par la sienne propre : « Faites pénitence, car le royaume des cieux est proche⁵ ». Le Seigneur donc fit choix de quelques disciples qu’il nomma apôtres, sans naissance, sans considération, sans lettres, afin d’être et de faire en eux tout ce qu’ils seraient et feraient de grand. Parmi eux se trouva un méchant; mais le Sauveur, usant bien d’une mauvaise créature, se servit d’elle pour accomplir ce qui était ordonné touchant sa passion, et pour apprendre, par son exemple, à son Eglise à supporter les méchants. Ensuite, après avoir jeté les semences de l’Evangile, il souffrit, mourut et ressuscita, montrant par sa passion ce que nous devons endurer pour la vérité, et par sa résurrection ce que nous devons espérer pour l’éternité, sans parler du profond mystère de son sang répandu pour la rémission des péchés. Il conversa quarante jours sur la terre avec ses disciples, et monta au ciel devant leurs yeux; et dix jours après, il leur envoya, suivant sa promesse, l’Esprit-Saint de son père, dont la venue sur les fidèles est marquée par ce signe suprême et nécessaire qu’ils parlaient toute sorte de langues[^6], figure de l’unité de l’Eglise catholique, qui devait se répandre dans tout l’univers et parler les langues de tous les peuples.

Chapter 49.--Of the Indiscriminate Increase of the Church, Wherein Many Reprobate are in This World Mixed with the Elect.

In this wicked world, in these evil days, when the Church measures her future loftiness by her present humility, and is exercised by goading fears, tormenting sorrows, disquieting labors, and dangerous temptations, when she soberly rejoices, rejoicing only in hope, there are many reprobate mingled with the good, and both are gathered together by the gospel as in a drag net; ¹ and in this world, as in a sea, both swim enclosed without distinction in the net, until it is brought ashore, when the wicked must be separated from the good, that in the good, as in His temple, God may be all in all. We acknowledge, indeed, that His word is now fulfilled who spake in the psalm, and said, "I have announced and spoken; they are multiplied above number." ² This takes place now, since He has spoken, first by the mouth of his forerunner John, and afterward by His own mouth, saying, "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." ³ He chose disciples, whom He also called apostles, ⁴ of lowly birth, unhonored, and illiterate, so that whatever great thing they might be or do, He might be and do it in them. He had one among them whose wickedness He could use well in order to accomplish His appointed passion, and furnish His Church an example of bearing with the wicked. Having sown the holy gospel as much as that behoved to be done by His bodily presence, He suffered, died, and rose again, showing by His passion what we ought to suffer for the truth, and by His resurrection what we ought to hope for in adversity; saving always the mystery of the sacrament, by which His blood was shed for the remission of sins. He held converse on the earth forty days with His disciples, and in their sight ascended into heaven, and after ten days sent the promised Holy Spirit. It was given as the chief and most necessary sign of His coming on those who had believed, that every one of them spoke in the tongues of all nations; thus signifying that the unity of the catholic Church would embrace all nations, and would in like manner speak in all tongues.
