Seeing therefore, too, these cases occur in persecutions more than at other times, as there is then among us more of proving or rejecting, more of abusing or punishing, it must be that their general occurrence is permitted or commanded by Him at whose will they happen even partially; by Him, I mean, who says, "I am He who make peace and create evil," ¹ --that is, war, for that is the antithesis of peace. But what other war has our peace than persecution? If in its issues persecution emphatically brings either life or death, either wounds or healing, you have the author, too, of this. "I will smite and heal, I will make alive and put to death." ² "I will burn them," He says, "as gold is burned; and I will try them," He says, "as silver is tried," ³ for when the flame of persecution is consuming us, then the stedfastness of our faith is proved. These will be the fiery darts of the devil, by which faith gets a ministry of burning and kindling; yet by the will of God. As to this I know not who can doubt, unless it be persons with frivolous and frigid faith, which seizes upon those who with trembling assemble together in the church. For you say, seeing we assemble without order, and assemble at the same time, and flock in large numbers to the church, the heathen are led to make inquiry about us, and we are alarmed lest we awaken their anxieties. Do ye not know that God is Lord of all? And if it is God's will, then you shall suffer persecution; but if it is not, the heathen will be still. Believe it most surely, if indeed you believe in that God without whose will not even the sparrow, a penny can buy, falls to the ground. ⁴ But we, I think, are better than many sparrows.

Si la persécution amène surtout avec elle ces tribulations; si c'est alors que nous sommes éprouvés et réprouvés, humiliés et amendés, il faut bien que ces tentations générales soient ordonnées ou permises par celui qui ordonne ou permet les tentations particulières; à savoir, par celui qui a dit: «C'est moi qui fais la paix et envoie les fléaux,» c'est-à-dire la guerre; car c'est le contraire de la paix. Or, quelle guerre plus formidable pour notre paix que la persécution? Si les résultats de la persécution nous apportent la vie ou la. mort, la blessure ou la guérison, elle a pour auteur celui qui a rendu cet oracle: «C'est moi qui frappe et qui guéris; moi qui tue et qui fais vivre.» ---- «Je les purifierai, dit-il ailleurs, comme on purifie l'argent, et je les éprouverai comme on éprouve l'or.» C'est qu'en effet notre foi s'épure au creuset de la persécution. Les voilà ces traits enflammés qui nous brûlent et nous éprouvent, d'après la volonté de Dieu cependant. Je ne sais qui peut en douter, sinon une foi frivole et froide, une foi qui se glisse à pas timides dans l'Eglise. Car vous dites: Quand nous nous rendons de toutes parts et en foule à l'église, les Gentils nous dénoncent: nous craignons qu'ils ne prennent ombrage de notre multitude. Mais ne savez-vous pas que le Seigneur est le maître de tous? Que Dieu le veuille, vous souffrirez la persécution; que Dieu ne le veuille pas, les nations resteront dans le silence. Tu dois le croire, si tu crois en ce Dieu, «sans la volonté duquel un seul passereau ne tombe pas sur la terre. Or, nous valons mieux que beaucoup de passereaux.»
