Quelle est donc, je ne dis pas l'erreur, mais la fureur des Manichéens, de faire de notre chair l'oeuvre de je ne sais quelle nation ténébreuse, nation éternelle et éternellement mauvaise ? L'Apôtre, inspiré par la vérité, n'exhorte-t-il pas les époux à aimer leurs épouses comme leur propre chair? Et pour rendre son exhortation plus pressante, n'invoque-t-il pas l'exemple de Jésus-Christ et de son Eglise ? Citons tout entier ce passage de sa lettre; il se présente ici fort à propos : « Epoux, dit-il, aimez vos épouses comme Jésus-Christ a aimé son Eglise ; car il s'est livré à la mort pour elle, afin de la sanctifier, la purifiant dans le bain salutaire de « l'eau et par la parole. C'est ainsi qu'il a voulu se faire une Eglise glorieuse, sans tache et sans souillure, sainte et immaculée. De même, les époux doivent aimer leurs épouses comme leur propre corps. Celui qui aime son épouse, s'aime lui-même¹ ». Il termine par ces mots, déjà cités plus haut

« Car personne n'a jamais haï sa propre chair; au contraire, il la nourrit et la soigne comme Jésus-Christ le fait pour son Eglise ». A un témoignage aussi formel, que peut opposer la folie de l'impiété la plus grossière? Manichéens, qu'y opposez-vous ? Vous essayez de produire les lettres apostoliques pour nous prouver votre système des deux natures, l'une bonne et l'autre mauvaise; pourquoi donc refuser d'entendre ces mêmes lettres apostoliques quand elles condamnent votre perversité sacrilège ? Vous lisez: « La chair convoite contre l'esprit²; le bien n'habite pas dans ma chair » ; lisez donc aussi : « Personne n'a jamais haï sa chair, il la nourrit au contraire et la soigne comme Jésus-Christ le fait pour son Eglise ». Vous lisez : «Je vois dans mes membres une autre loi qui répugne à la loi de mon esprit³ » ; lisez donc aussi : « Comme Jésus-Christ a aimé son Eglise, ainsi les époux doivent aimer leurs épouses, comme leur propre corps ». Parmi ces témoignages de l'Ecriture sainte, ne cherchez pas à faire servir les uns à vos perfides desseins et à fermer l'oreille aux autres; ainsi vous serez toujours dans le vrai. Interprétez ces derniers comme le bon sens l'exige, et vous comprendrez les autres dans leur véritable signification.

I say not, therefore, with what error, but with what utter madness, do the Manichees attribute our flesh to some, I know not what, fabled "race of darkness," ¹ which they will have hath had its own nature without any beginning ever evil: whereas the true teacher exhorts men to love their own wives by the pattern of their own flesh, and exhorts them unto this very thing by the pattern also of Christ and the Church. Lastly, we must call to mind the whole place itself of the Epistle of the Apostle, relating greatly unto the matter in hand. "Husbands," saith he, "love your wives, as Christ also loved the Church, and delivered Himself up for it, that He might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of the water in the word: that He might set forth unto Himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it may be holy and unspotted. So," saith he, "husbands also ought to love their own wives, as their own bodies. Whoso loveth his own wife, loveth himself." ² Then he added, what we have already made mention of, "For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth it, and cherisheth it; as also Christ the Church." ³ What saith the madness of most impure impiety in answer to these things? What say ye in answer to these things, ye Manichees; ye who wish to bring in upon us, as if out of the Epistles of the Apostles, two natures without beginning, one of good, the other of evil: and will not listen to the Epistles of the Apostles, that they may correct you from that sacrilegious perverseness? As ye read, "The flesh lusteth against the spirit," ⁴ and, "There dwelleth not in my flesh any good;" ⁵ so read ye, "No one ever hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as also Christ the Church." ⁶ As ye read, "I see another law in my members, opposed to the law of my mind;" ⁷ so read ye, "As Christ loved the Church, so also ought men to love their own wives, as their own bodies." Be not ye crafty in the former witnesses of Holy Scripture, and deaf in this latter, and ye shall be correct in both. For, if ye receive the latter as right is, ye will endeavor to understand the former also as truth is.
