31. Lob der Propheten Isaias, Jeremias, Daniel, Johannes.

Wen von euch soll ich mehr lieben als dich?¹ Freilich wohl wird auch Jeremias gesteinigt. Mehr wohl Jeremias? Aber auch Daniel gibt Zeugniß. Daniel, dich lobe ich vor Allen. Aber auch Johannes sagt nichts Falsches. Wie soll ich euch mit Mund und Zunge verherrlichen, mehr noch S. 34 den Logos, der in euch geredet hat? Ihr starbet mit Christus, werdet aber leben mit Christus. Höret es und freuet euch! Siehe, das, was von euch verkündigt worden, ist seiner Zeit erfüllt worden. Denn ihr sahet es zuerst und habt es dann allen Völkern verkündigt, die Aussprüche Gottes habt ihr allen Völkern dargeboten. Propheten nanntet ihr euch, um Alle retten zu können. Denn der ist in Wirklichkeit ein Prophet, der zeigen kann, daß das, was er als Zukünftiges vorherverkündigt hat, später eingetreten ist. Ihr waret Schüler eines vortrefflichen Lehrers. Darob lobe ich euch mit Recht, als wenn ihr noch lebtet; denn schon besitzet ihr die im Himmel euch hinterlegte Krone des Lebens und der Unvergänglichkeit.²

31.

Which of you, then, shall I esteem more than thee? Yet Jeremiah, too, is stoned. But if I should esteem Jeremiah most, yet Daniel too has his testimony. Daniel, I commend thee above all; yet John too gives no false witness. With how many mouths and tongues would I praise you; or rather the Word who spake in you! Ye died with Christ; and ye will live with Christ. Hear ye, and rejoice; behold the things announced by you have been fulfilled in their time. For ye saw these things yourselves first, and then ye proclaimed them to all generations. Ye ministered the oracles of God to all generations. Ye prophets were called, that ye might be able to save all. For then is one a prophet indeed, when, having announced beforetime things about to be, he can afterwards show that they have actually happened. Ye were the disciples of a good Master. These words I address to you as if alive, and with propriety. For ye hold already the crown of life and immortality which is laid up for you in heaven. ¹
