So an einer andern Stelle: „Wie feiert der Dränger, ruhet die Zinspflicht! Zerbrochen hat der Herr den Stock der Gottlosen, den Stock der Zwingherrn, welcher Völker schlug im Grimme mit unheilbaren Wunden, der im Zorn Nationen unterjochte, grausam verfolgte. Es ruhet und schweigt die ganze Erde, sie freut sich und jubelt. Selbst die Tannen freuen sich über dich und des Libanons Cedern: Seitdem du zur Ruhe gegangen, kommt Niemand mehr, der uns fället.“ Das Todtenreich drunten wird aufgestört S. 25 deiner Ankunft entgegen, es wecket auf vor dir die Schatten. Alle Fürsten der Erde erheben sich von ihren Thronen, alle Fürsten der Völker. Alle zumal entgegnen und sagen zu dir: Auch du bist getroffen, wie auch wir; uns bist du gleich geworden. Hingeschlungen zum Todtenreiche ist dein Stolz, gestürzet deine Leiche, unter dir ist das Bett die Motte und sind deine Decke Würmer. Wie bist du gefallen vom Himmel, Morgenstern, der du früh aufstrahltest! bist hinabgestürzt zur Erde, der du todeswund gemacht die Völker! Der du gesprochen in deinem Herzen: Zum Himmel will ich aufsteigen, über den Gestirnen Gottes erhöhen meinen Thron, will niedersitzen auf dem Berge des Zeugnisses, an des Nordens Seiten. Aufsteigen will ich über die Höhen der Wolken, gleich sein dem Allerhöchsten. Ja doch — zum Todtenreiche stürzest du hinab, in die Tiefe der Grube. Die dich sehen, neigen sich über dich und schauen auf dich: „Ist dies der Mann, welcher erschüttert hat die Erde, welcher die Reiche stürzte, welcher den Erdkreis zur Wüste gemacht und dessen Städte zerstörte, seinen Gefangenen nicht öffnet den Kerker? Alle Könige der Völker zumal schlummern in Ehren. Jeder in seinem Hause; du aber bist hingeworfen, fern von deinem Grabe wie ein unnützer, unreiner Staub und bedeckt von Solchen, welche erschlagen worden durch's Schwert, und die hinabgesenkt sind zum Boden der Grube — wie moderndes Aas. Nicht wirst du Gemeinschaft haben mit ihnen, auch nicht im Grabe, denn du hast dein Land verwüstet, du hast dein Volk gemordet; nicht werde genannt in Ewigkeit der Same der Bösewichter. Bereitet seine Söhne zum Hinschlachten ob der Schuld ihrer Väter, daß sie nicht aufstehen und nicht in Besitz nehmen die Erde.¹

17.

And again he says in another place: "How hath the exactor ceased, and how hath the oppressor ceased! ¹ God hath broken the yoke of the rulers of sinners, He who smote the people in wrath, and with an incurable stroke: He that strikes the people with an incurable stroke, which He did not spare. He ceased (rested) confidently: the whole earth shouts with rejoicing. The trees of Lebanon rejoiced at thee, and the cedar of Lebanon, (saying), Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. Hell from beneath is moved at meeting thee: all the mighty ones, the rulers of the earth, are gathered together--the lords from their thrones. All the kings of the nations, all they shall answer together, and shall say, And thou, too, art taken as we; and thou art reckoned among us. Thy pomp is brought down to earth, thy great rejoicing: they will spread decay under thee; and the worm shall be thy covering. ² How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! ³ He is cast down to the ground who sends off to all the nations. And thou didst say in thy mind, I will ascend into heaven, I will set my throne above the stars of heaven: I will sit down upon the lofty mountains towards the north: I will ascend above the clouds: I will be like the Most High. Yet now thou shalt be brought down to hell, and to the foundations of the earth! They that see thee shall wonder at thee, and shall say, This is the man that excited the earth, that did shake kings, that made the whole world a wilderness, and destroyed the cities, that released not those in prison. ⁴ All the kings of the earth did lie in honour, every one in his own house; but thou shalt be cast out on the mountains like a loathsome carcase, with many who fall, pierced through with the sword, and going down to hell. As a garment stained with blood is not pure, so neither shalt thou be comely (or clean); because thou hast destroyed my land, and slain my people. Thou shalt not abide, enduring for ever, a wicked seed. Prepare thy children for slaughter, for the sins of thy father, that they rise not, neither possess my land." ⁵
