54.

And once being asked by the monks to come down and visit them and their abodes after a time, he journeyed with those who came to him. And a camel carried the loaves and the water for them. For all that desert is dry, and there is no water at all that is fit to drink, save in that mountain from whence they drew the water, and in which Antony’s cell was. So when the water failed them on their way, and the heat was very great, they all were in danger. For having gone round the neighbourhood and finding no water, they could walk no further, but lay on the ground and despairing of themselves, let the camel go. But the old man seeing that they were all in jeopardy, groaning in deep grief, departed a little way from them, and kneeling down he stretched forth his hands and prayed. And immediately the Lord made water to well forth where he had stood praying, and so all drank and were revived. And having filled their bottles they sought the camel and found her, for the rope happened to have caught in a stone and so was held fast. Having led it and watered it they placed the bottles on its back and finished their journey in safety. And when he came to the outer cells all saluted him, looking on him as a father. And he too, as though bringing supplies from the mountain, entertained them with his words and gave them a share of help. And again there was joy in the mountains, zeal for improvement and consolation through their mutual faith. Antony also rejoiced when he beheld the earnestness of the monks, and his sister grown old in virginity, and that she herself also was the leader of other virgins.

Chapitre LIV

Comme ses disciples le priait de descendre de la montagne pour aller les voir et visiter leurs monastères, Antoine partit avec eux et fit porter sur un chameau des pains et de l’eau. (Car tout le désert était si sec qu’on ne trouve de l’eau bonne à boire que sur la montagne où il l’avait puisée et où était son monastère). L’eau qu’ils portaient fut insuffisante au milieu du voyage et la chaleur était excessive. Ils furent réduits à une telle extrémité qu’ils ne pouvaient plus attendre que la mort. Car après avoir cherché de tous côtés sans trouver d’eau, et n’ayant plus la force de marcher, ils demeurèrent couchés par terre avec si peu d’espérance, qu’ils laissèrent même aller leur chameau. Le saint vieillard, au comble de la douleur en les voyant dans cet état, jetait de profonds soupirs. Il s’éloigna un peu d’eux, mit les genoux à terre, éleva les mains vers le ciel et eut recours à Dieu par la prière. Le Seigneur l’exauça aussitôt en faisant sortir de l’eau du lieu même où il était en oraison. Tous ses disciples burent et reprirent de nouvelles forces. Après avoir rempli les peaux de bouc qu’ils avaient apportées, ils cherchèrent et trouvèrent leur chameau qui, par hasard, était arrêté à une pierre, autour de laquelle son licol s’était entortillé. Ainsi, l’ayant ramené et l’ayant fait boire, ils mirent sur lui leurs peaux de bouc et achevèrent heureusement leur voyage.

Antoine arriva chez les solitaires qui l’avaient convié à aller les voir. Tous le considéraient comme leur père : ils l’embrassaient et le baisaient. Lui, comme présents apportés de la montagne, les enrichissait de ses discours et leur faisait part de tous ses biens spirituels. Alors, comme dit l’Ecriture, il y eut une nouvelle joie sur les montagnes. L’émulation pour grandir dans la vertu augmenta avec ces bonnes armes et chacun d’eux, en considérant la foi des autres, était rempli de consolation. Antoine n’en recevait pas une moindre, en voyant la ferveur de tous ces solitaires, et en voyant que sa sœur qu’il avait laissée si jeune, avait vieilli dans la virginité et était devenue la supérieure des autres vierges.
