The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians

Chapter X.--Continuation of the above.

Abraham, styled "the friend," ¹ was found faithful, inasmuch as he rendered obedience to the words of God. He, in the exercise of obedience, went out from his own country, and from his kindred, and from his father's house, in order that, by forsaking a small territory, and a weak family, and an insignificant house, he might inherit the promises of God. For God said to him, "Get thee out from thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, into the land which I shall show thee. And I will make thee a great nation, and will bless thee, and make thy name great, and thou shall be blessed. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed." ² And again, on his departing from Lot, God said to him. "Lift up thine eyes, and look from the place where thou now art, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward; for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, [so that] if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered." ³ And again [the Scripture] saith, "God brought forth Abram, and spake unto him, Look up now to heaven, and count the stars if thou be able to number them; so shall thy seed be. And Abram believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness." ⁴ On account of his faith and hospitality, a son was given him in his old age; and in the exercise of obedience, he offered him as a sacrifice to God on one of the mountains which He showed him. ⁵

10. Kap. Das Beispiel Abrahams.

1. Abraham, der Freund genannt, wurde als gläubig befunden, weil er den Worten Gottes gehorsam war. 2. Dieser ging in Gehorsam weg aus seinem Lande, aus seiner Verwandtschaft und aus seinem Vaterhause, um ein kleines Land, eine schwache Verwandtschaft und ein kleines Haus zu verlassen und dafür die Verheißungen Gottes zu erben. Denn er sagt ihm: 3. „Gehe hinweg aus deinem Lande und aus deiner Verwandtschaft und aus dem Hause deines Vaters in das Land, das ich dir zeigen werde; und ich werde dich zu einem großen Volke machen und ich werde dich segnen und werde deinen Namen groß machen, und du wirst gesegnet sein; und ich werde segnen, die dich segnen, und verfluchen, die dich verfluchen, und in dir werden gesegnet werden alle Geschlechter der Erde“¹. 4. Und wiederum bei seinem Abschied von Lot sagte ihm Gott: „Erhebe deine S. 32 Augen und schaue von dem Orte, wo du jetzt bist, nach Norden und Süden, nach Osten und Westen; denn alles Land, das du siehst, ich werde es dir und deinem Samen geben auf ewig. 5. Und ich werde deine Nachkommen machen wie den Staub der Erde; wenn einer den Staub der Erde zählen kann, wird man auch deinen Samen zählen können“². 6. Und wiederum sagt er: „Gott führte den Abraham heraus und sagte zu ihm: Schaue auf zum Himmel und zähle die Sterne, wenn du sie zählen kannst; so wird dein Same sein. Abraham glaubte aber seinem Gott, und es wurde ihm angerechnet zur Gerechtigkeit"³. 7. Wegen seines Glaubens und seiner Gastfreundschaft wurde ihm im Alter ein Sohn geschenkt, und im Gehorsam brachte er ihn Gott als Opfer hin auf einen der Berge, die er ihm gezeigt hatte.
