Chapter XLII.--The order of ministers in the Church.

The apostles have preached the Gospel to us from ¹ the Lord Jesus Christ; Jesus Christ [has done so] from ² God. Christ therefore was sent forth by God, and the apostles by Christ. Both these appointments, ³ then, were made in an orderly way, according to the will of God. Having therefore received their orders, and being fully assured by the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and established ⁴ in the word of God, with full assurance of the Holy Ghost, they went forth proclaiming that the kingdom of God was at hand. And thus preaching through countries and cities, they appointed the first-fruits [of their labours], having first proved them by the Spirit, ⁵ to be bishops and deacons of those who should afterwards believe. Nor was this any new thing, since indeed many ages before it was written concerning bishops and deacons. For thus saith the Scripture in a certain place, "I will appoint their bishops ⁶ in righteousness, and their deacons ⁷ in faith." ⁸

42. Kap. Die kirchliche Ordnung stammt von Gott.

1. Die Apostel haben uns das Evangelium verkündet, (das sie) vom Herrn Jesus Christus (bekommen haben), Jesus Christus aber ist gesandt von Gott. 2. Christus ist also von Gott und die Apostel von Christus (gesandt); beides ist demnach geschehen in aller Ordnung nach dem Willen Gottes. 3. Sie empfingen also ihre Aufträge, wurden durch die Auferstehung unseres Herrn Jesus Christus mit Gewissheit erfüllt, wurden im Glauben an das Wort Gottes gefestigt, und dann zogen sie voll des Heiligen Geistes hinaus zur Predigt, dass das Reich Gottes nahe sei. 4. Indem sie nun in Ländern und Städten predigten, setzten sie die Erstlingsfrüchte ihrer (Predigt), nach vorhergegangener Prüfung im Geiste, zu Bischöfen und Diakonen der zukünftigen Gläubigen ein. 5. Und dies war nichts Neues; denn schon seit langer Zeit war geschrieben über Bischöfe und Diakone. So nämlich sagt einmal die Schrift: „Ich will einsetzen ihre Bischöfe in Gerechtigkeit und ihre Diakone in Treue“¹.
